Does anyone else find reading news in Huffington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Time magazine or Mother Jones helpfull in building up vocabulary? With the election season news at the highest point, I think reading those articles has improved my overall understanding of reading passages.

I'm sure it would help in vocab, but even more so in speed. Most DAT passages are highly scientific which might not be in those you listed. Regardless, the more you read, the better you will get. I'm positive it wouldn't hurt.

Not sure when your DAT is, but I suggest finding resources that time you. I found that my biggest constraint on doing well on RC was being under the clock.

I read science journals but I think that was an outlet for my procrastination lol. I suggest getting Crack the DAT reading and search/destroy. It times you so you are used to those constraints before the big day. Good luck! 🙂

I would focus on the sciences. I didn't study a second for RC. Got a 24. If you can read well, just read the passage and answer the question. Mark one's you don't know. Go back. All this search and destroy crap is stupid. I thought it was the easiest section of the test. Don't waste money on prep materials...

Forgive me, but that is incredibly careless, potentially dangerous advice. Just because something worked for you does NOT mean it will work for someone else. You must take greater care when doling out advice (especially damaging and damning advice) with a grain of salt.

OP, it is no secret that the RC subsection is of increasingly greater importance to the adcoms. It has been shown to be a great (perhaps #1) predictor of success in dental school, primarily the first two years (makes sense, we will be reading copious amounts). To that effect, if you are at all concerned, make your best effort to do well on this subsection so that you are nothing but confident on exam day. YES, do practice exams, review your mistakes, test out strategies, and if you really want, read some articles. Do not not prep for this section.

To answer your question, I personally did not prep by reading articles; some have and say it's worked, others disagree. There is a lot of debate on SDN regarding that matter. I think however, that by reading articles, at the very least you would increase speed, which, coupled with comprehension are critical to success. Hopefully you will continue achieving a higher level of both. I wouldn't worry too much about challenging vocab unless English is not your first language. If that is the case, I would study common Latin roots/prefixes/suffixes. Best of luck!

I found reading science journals works great for vocabulary. So as reading political journals. Speed, however is a different issue. If I read fast, I cannot grasp the full theme of the article. I hate skimming through, befause if you do, you will loose important points.

Well put...

All i gotta say is you cannot study for the RC .. it's just that .. reading comprehension .. That being said the best way to study for the RC is simply by timing yourself and seeing how long it takes you to read and how long it takes you to answer questions. If you know how you will respond on test day and you are ready, then you'll be fine because its just reading not rocket science. That being said I got a 17 on RC because I did not have my self figured out good enough. Does that make sense? Other than that the reading was easy..

Thank you. I see your point. I must get over the idea where if I read fast, I will miss something. I will start timing myself on articles.

I would read more boring materials. You seem like you're actually interested in those subjects (politics, whatever). That will most likely not be true for the RC material (engineering, sciences, math).
