So whenever I sit down to write one of the essays I draw a complete blank and can't think of any examples. It's not for lack of exposure; I've read the New York Times every day for years, I listen to NPR all the time, I pay attention to the world around me. I just can't think of anything when the time comes! First of all, does anybody have any suggestions? Also, should I even care? It's just the essay section, after all...

what you can do, and this might sound kinda odd at first, but for practice, it might help. i did this in my english class when i had no clue what to write. just sit down and write something, regardless of whether or not it pertains to the question. eventually something worthwhile will come out. and then you can pick out what the good idea was. and when i say anything, i mean literally anything. example:

"This is really stupid. i don't want to do this. blah blah. My dog barks too loud. Sammy's hair sticks up funny. what's up with spongebob? how does a pineapple actually work as a house?....... (Brilliant idea) my nose itches. i need to do dishes. Becky

and then you realize you had a brilliant idea and you can now write your essay. and with practice, the brilliant idea should come sooner and sooner, so you won't have to spend as long on the pen diarrea. it worked for me in my english class, because i often had no clue just how to begin, and getting that first line down was the hard part, but when you're not so concerned with it, it comes out easier, assuming of course you have some vague idea of what the question means and just don't know what to put down.

You need to have a couple of good ideas to write about that fit essentially every prompt they throw at you. A couple of those include things like Bill Clinton, the War in Iraq, etc.
