I just realized that I made a really stupid mistake--I'm applying to UMass Boston and on the envelopes that I sent my recommenders to put their letters in, I spelled "Massachusetts" as "Massachussetts." Tiny difference, I know--but wrong! Do you think anyone will notice, or care?

Most lilkley, the only person that will see that is the department secretary when she putting applicant files togther. I doubt she'll tattle.......

Thanks, guys! I feel better about it now.

As a southerner , I have to chime in with my opinion that its not your fault. The Yankees up there need to change the names of their states to something easier to spell.

That made me laugh--I'm originally from the South too, and I currently live in Washington State, where we have "Sequim" (pronounced "squim"), "Puyallup" ("pyoo-ALL-up"), Snoqualmie, and Tulalip ("too-LAY-lip), among others.

I've lived in MA my whole life, and it took me a moment to see what you did wrong. It doesn't jump out. I doubt anyone will notice.

It's no more difficult than mississippi with all those I's S's and P's.

I don't really think this is a big deal either, but if I were you I would still send new envelopes to the recommenders if there's time. I figure it's a good idea to make yourself look as professional as humanly possible, so if you notice a mistake you made while there's still time to fix it, why not fix it?

I also don't think anyone will notice except whoever is opening the envelopes (and they may not even see it) but if it bothers you why not ask the recommenders to fix it, they could just put it in another envelope or you could make a label and send it to them to patch over the address? I know they are busy folks but if they are supporting your application, I am sure they will understand and it is a quick fix.

UMass has a special black box for the applications of applicants that incorrectly spell state names... 😀

If it's any consolation, I accidentally misspelled my place of residence 😱

As long as you didn't put "I am a Yankees fan" anywhere on the application you should be fine... 😛

The fact that I actually glanced at that message and gasped a little bit shows how anxious and gullible this process is making me.

It's too late for my recommenders to change the envelopes, but I think I'll print out a label and put it over what's already printed on there. Thanks for the suggestion upthread--for some reason that didn't occur to me!

I hope you don't worry too much about this. Writing the wrong school's name would be more of a concern, and people survive that. Even if someone does notice, they may just assume it is the mistake of your recommenders. Also, it is my understanding that professors in doctoral programs are not winning any spelling bees either 🙂 Congratulations on getting your letters done!

That's not that bad.
I just realized today that I wrote "such" instead of "such as" for 6 of the personal statements I've submitted 🙁. I hope it won't be a big issue later on.

It can't be any worse than applying to Texas A&M and putting Texas Tech throughout my personal statement. How embarrassing...

I wrote off A&M after I realized the gaff, only to be accepted early with only a phone interview!

So don't assume anything!

That is perhaps the single most uplifting reveal I've seen on these boards. Thanks!

Oh my god, totally. I feel a lot better now (although I also did change the envelopes!). I'm sure I've made at least one mistake somewhere...
