Stupid Philosophy

I can't believe i got a B+ on my paper in philosophy. Our professor is a ***** who doesn't believe in giving out A's. I talked to so many people after class. No one had gotten higher than a B+.

Man, they are gonna ruin my GPA with a stupid class. You're supposed to get A's in stupid gen ed classes like these!

given your professor has a PhD and you dont.
I dont think you could support your argument very well.

Remember this is a forum to help students to get to dental school.

Well i have organic right now. If i get a B in that, and a B in philosophy too, it kinda screws up the GPA you know? I was hoping that even if I had a B in organic, an A in philosophy would balance the overall GPA.

That is, all my other classes stay at an A.

I was always Pre-Dental! Been like that for over a year now.

It would be preferred if you got an A in organic rather than philosophy. Why are you taking philosophy anyway? Everyone on campus will tell you that is one of the worst elective you can choose. Choose something like ecology or zoology. You should have more luck in classes like those.

I still have a hard time taking seriously people who go spastic over nothing--"omg I got two B's in one semester I'm doomed"

Give yourself a break. Do your best, and just take in stride what comes back. If you're freaking out about getting a couple B's in undergrad, you'll be in for a VERY rude awakening when you get to grad school and you pull in some C's on early exams while you're still trying to get your feet beneath you.

Just do your best to make up for it, and don't shorten your life worrying about what you can't change. Good luck!

Aphistis, lemme ask you something though. I mean the worst thing that can happen in grad school when you get a C and pass through your courses is that you become a genral dentist. However, in undergraduate studies, I personally believe that every grade counts because you are trying to compete with others to get into a particular school. Am I wrong?

but do grades really even count THIS semester? If you get accepted in december, why do your grades still matter....obviously you shouldn't run around getting F's......

Do we HAVE to send AADSAS an update with new grades in january?? I hope not because I am missing lots of class from interviews and such and I have not-so-great classes, like physical chemistry. (stupid p-chem!!)

One of my buddies, "ciocc-master," says his entire education consists of stupid gen ed. classes. He's so damn general.

I think it varies from school to school. Some schools will take straight C's and others assume you will "continue at or above your current level" type of stuff. Hopefully i can get a liberal university and spend some more time on my golf swing .

No, the worst thing that can happen in grad school is failing out, and incurring >$100,000 in debt with absolutely nothing to show for it. We've had two leaves of absence granted already--would you be willing to bet they both come back to finish their degree, and that nobody else will leave? 5% may not be much attrition, but it surely sucks to be one of those in the 5%.

On the other hand, what's the worst that can happen in undergrad? You don't get in to grad school, and you're left with a perfectly marketable bachelor's degree that didn't cost you a cent more than it would have if you'd been admitted to grad school.

If getting a B+ on a single assignment registers as a major traumatic blow to your academic career, you're either capable enough that dental school admission will be NO problem whatsoever, or you're just plain spoiled. Living means occasionally falling short of perfection; it's a lesson you can learn easily now, or painfully later.
