Stupid question: What program counts number of characters?

microsoft word. Go to tools, than words count. It will count characters including spaces

awesome, thanks

sorry, i'm exceptionally stupid when i'm stressed

Psycho, use word to get a good character count, but be extremely careful about just cutting and pasting from word to your PS. I used wordpad and saved as a text file. Then I cut and pasted into Word to get a character count. I cut and pasted separately into the PS. Then I checked the PS very thoroughly before submitting. Some characters may not come out right and the spacing almost certainly won't come out right without your intervention.

excellent points, thank you.

Also, be careful when hitting hard return (between paragraphs) as that counts as two characters.

yikes!

how crucial is the character count..i mean do they care if it's a few characters over, or is the point that it won't physically fit in the space provided?

very crucial. it will cut you off if you're over the limit.

And your character count from word may show you're within the limit, but the AMCAS program counts slightly differently (higher) and so you'll get cut off. In Word, bring it in a hundred characters or so short of the limit and see how that works for you.

word tends to mess up ellipsis, quotation marks, and apostrophes when you go to paste it into a browser.
