What exactly counts as parental estrangement?

Ok so: It is likely that I matriculate to a particular institution. I am an independent adult however this institution requires information about my biological parents' finances regardless of my age/marital status/etc. My relationship with them is Very rocky (think: kicked out of the house in HS) but I am not strictly out of contact with them. What counts as parental estrangement and how is a situation like this one typically navigated? Thanks all!! : )
