Stutttttering

Not that I am a stutterer but my sister has a frined who is like suuuuuppper smart(i.e. all As in science/math classes) but he has trouble initiating his speech and stutters mildly. His mind is a genius; he just can't express himself in words. I was just wondering whether or not this will be a problem with him getting into pharmacy school since communication is kinda a big issue. I just know that amputees do get into pharmcy school.

Uuuhhhhhhhhhhhh.......probably not.

However....you know...uh....the interviewers do do sort of evaluate one's ability to verbally ca-ca-ca-communicate during the interview. Uh..because..like if your friend stutttters so much that he...likes..can't communicate at all, then that'll hurt him. Still...like you know...high grades, uh PCAT scores, and LORs will make that concern um moot you know so.......😀
 
My uncle stutters and i know how frustrating it could be sometimes so Advise him to apply to school who do not perform interviews like Albany COP
 
Now that's an interesting situation; I've never heard of a school discriminating between applicants due to stuttering.

However, I would recommend that you have your friend enroll in a intensive speech guidance course. A good 6 month session with a speech therapist may actually help alleviate his stuttering; my friend used to stutter before his parents put him through a private speech tutor; a year later he was part of the speech team and doing just fine. It's just a matter of practicing, sorting out mentally what is to be said, and then vocalizing it precisely.

But as far as I know, as long as what he is saying is comprehendable, then there's no problem with him going to the interview; otherwise ESL students would be in huge trouble. I've know a fair few ESL students who achieve admissions into pharmacy programs.
 
Interesting topic. Speech therapy wouldn't be a bad idea, but I don't think a pharmacy program would discriminate against stuttering. In fact, I've known a pharmacist who stuttered upon saying some words... 😛
 
There was a discussion about areas of pharmacy that don't involve any patient contact whatsover. Someone mentioned Nuclear pharmacy and hospital pharmacy where all you do is sign off medications. Are there other areas of pharmacy that don't require a lot of direct communication such as online and such?
