I hope that I will be a competitive applicant at top radiology programs next year. I have heard inconsistent advice about the importance of sub-internships for them. A VA medicine attending will write me a strong LOR based on my performance this year, so I do not need to get a LOR from my sub-i. There are very limited numbers of early sub-i slots in medicine at my school, which is making me consider trying to get a slot in another specialty. My school gives out positions through a lottery system.

So... how important is it to do a sub-internship before my ERAS goes out? Are there specialties other than medicine worth trying to get a slot in if that allows me to do the sub-i earlier?

Thanks!

People at your school are competing to do their required medicine subinternships early so they can receive a LORs before ERAS opens? This is a thing? I thought people mainly compete for specialty subinternships prior to ERAS going out, so they can get specific LORs (seeing as residency programs like to receive LORs from core rotations during third year, including medicine).

If you can get 3 strong letters (1 rad, 2 non-rad) before ERAS, then you're fine. Although if you are required to do a Sub-I for your school, I would recommend doing it before interview season just so that you can enjoy the rest of your 4th year.

Medicine sub-I can help with interviews at some of the more competitive TY programs, but I have not heard of it having a significant impact on radiology interviews.

Would doing a surgery sub-I if applying for DR/IR primarily with DR as backup be ok as well? Thinking about doing a vascular sub-i...

Do whatever sub-I you want to do. I did a SICU sub-I and applied DR only. Don't think that held me back at all. Got a great letter from that rotation that was brought up at almost all of my interviews.
