Hey all,

I am sort of in a dilemma about submitting my AMCA right now. I have the application completed; however I have still been looking for more feedback on my personal statement. I am a re-applicant and was told by the schools that have rejected me that I did not communicate "Why Medicine?" well enough so I wanted to make it clear in my personal statement. I was hoping to get this feedback from a professor who I do research with, but she will be busy writing grants until 6/24, so I know I can get feedback immediately from her on 6/24, but nothing before then. It should also be noted that I am on 3 waitlists right now so I was planning on waiting probably until 6/17 anyway, but in my mind 6/24 might be overdoing it. Would I be crazy for waiting until 6/24 just to get more feedback on my PS? Or would it not be that big of a deal especially considering the application delay?

Could you get feedback from anyone else? Other professors, advisors, or friends?

I don't think it would be a huge deal to submit on or soon after 6/24, but no one can say for sure. If you're set on this professor and value their opinion very much, then I guess it would be worth the wait. And if you weren't planning on submitting until 6/17 anyways, then these few extra days probably won't make that much of a difference.

Personally, I would try to find someone else to read it, but seeing as this will be your second application cycle, I can see how you would want to ensure your personal statement is the best that it can be. In your case I think it would be better to submit a stronger application a little bit later. If you do decide to have your professor read it, I would just make sure to get your secondaries in as soon as possible, so maybe start working on those while you wait until 6/24 (not sure how much these will change from your previous cycle).

Please keep in mind that I am a current applicant, so I am in no way an expert. Hopefully some people with more experience will comment. Good luck!

This is just my personal experience and some opinions I have heard from others, but I don't think a research professor is necessarily the best person to even discuss "why medicine" with. Are there other people that can give you feedback? Perhaps even others on this site, family members, a physician you know?

I think it would be crazy to wait 2 weeks for a single person's opinion.

Any school you have previously applied to will look for significant changes in your app from last year. Are you planning on turning around and resubmitting to the same schools? With the same app?

Don't rush your PS. It is a major major part of your application. Applying in June is considered early. Take the time to get your PS properly critiqued, send it to more people. Make sure it's vastly improved from last year's.

I actually have had family members review it as well as someone on this site under the PS reader thread (he is about to be a m1 and got interviewed at 27 out of 30 schools applied). After taking their advice into consideration I sent my newest version back to the person in the PS reader thread and he said it was really good and that there were no new edits he could really think of. I guess I wanted this professors approval because she runs a research group with a few PhD students, an international PhD, and some undergrads and she critiques all their publications, presentations and grants so she is used to editing and is highly professional. Not to mention she has been on Dr. Oz before so, ya kind of a big deal🙄. But in reality maybe I don't need her input, I just wanted to make sure it was a great PS.

Hulk Smash, I am going to reapply to all the schools that I interviewed at and maybe a few that never sent an invitation because I feel like I have a way better app this time around. I will also apply to other schools then my previous application. I have added atleast 4 more experiences (2 of them are most meaningful - there both clinical, one is a work experience and the other hospital volunteering), and my PS is completely different and unrecognizable from last cycles. Also I'd adding 3 new LOR's 2 from the above experiences and one from this research professor. I am hoping this enough.
