Submit AACOMAS

Wait until July when you know your MCAT score. Unless your score is at least 505 there is no point in applying to MD schools. The DO cycle is later so there is no disadvantage to applying in July when you receive your score. If you score 500 or higher you would be competitive for DO schools.

So assuming my mcat gets to at least 505 - would i be too late (disadvantaged) if i submitted my stuff for md schools in july?

Submit to a throwaway school to get verified. Wait for results and then bang out apps.

Hi there,

So i would appreciate some advice. I plan on applying broadly to lots of DO schools and my stats for aacomas are cgpa/sgpa (conservatively) 3.7 ish. Solid ec. Solid letters of rec. Mt mcat sucks - 495. I am retaking it in june - would get scores back in mid July. My question is - should i submit my primary application with my 495 mcat just so it gets verified quicker or if i submit my primary application in july with my retake (i assume it to be around 500+) is that too late? And how would this situation change if i were to apply to aamc (md)? I want to apply broadly so idk maybe i might get a md school... But that's assuming i do a lot better on my mcat. Would you recommend applying to aamc in june (with 495 mcat) to verify ny app or just wait till july? Thanks! I would love @Faha and @Goro your opinions

I have a friend in a similar situation, but he's taking the retake in july (score release) august. Would you suggest doing the same thing?

Applying in July would really still be in the early application time frame. Goro is absolutely right on this, get your application process done for DO and MD and then wait until the new MCAT.

It would suck to be eliminated because you didn't make a cutoff and then have a school admissions office not update your application when the new score comes in. I know of one school that is really bad about updating their database/spread-sheets after the initial entry and then not telling the applicant anything other than your application is complete and in the review process.

As far as MD goes, you need to get an MCAT score closer to 515, but if you do then you'd have a decent shot. If you are in the low 500's then likely a waste for MD, but submitting with a 495 to MD is especially a waste of time unless you magically fall into that <1% of applicants that have some wow reason they love you (e.g. $$$$$$$ donation, father on the board).

Think new medical wing, maybe a bio research lab, enough to get a relative on the board, etc There is a school that has a TON of buildings, entry ways, library wings, research centers, parks etc named after people and relatives of the students there.

this might be a dumb question, but what do you guys mean by submitting to a throwaway school to get verified?

It's a way of getting your application completely through the process of aacomas checking transcripts and everything done when you still have something like an MCAT score pending. It gets you done without sending to every school out there that might reject you because you don't have an MCAT score or you are replacing a bad score or some such. Thus it can reduce you being automatically eliminated, which some schools do and then you have to fight with emails. So you pick a school you don't care about and run it through the submission process. If you have everything done and ready day 1 you don't need it.

It's more than $$. More like $$$$$$$

Lol i asked really early and one of them already has it done and is waiting until i tell him where to submit it lol.

While completing the application you put the names/source in. Ask writers early, then remind again as the time approaches. Some may take months to do it, so do wait until the last minute.

Hi there, So in the AACOMAS app where it specifically asks about Standardized tests, should I select 'I am not adding any standardized tests' or simply put my MCAT scheduled date? Given that if I am submitting to a throwaway for early verification process. Also, If I select 'I am not adding any standardized tests', would I be able to update MCAT score once I get back score and then send it to other schools? Am I getting it right here?!?

You'd put the date expected on the mcat (don't remember how specifically, but it tells you in the instructions) how to apply without the mcat being taken yet.

Yes, you can add the mcat when the score comes in later. You request the MCAT be sent to AACOMAS and as soon as they receive it (it was there the next day for me) then you can update your application and submit broadly.
