Unfortunately I received a failing PE score during interview season. I quickly scheduled a retake and recently received my passing score.

I am wondering if I should update my ERAS application? Currently, my application shows no PE score, however updating will show both a pass and a fail.

Overall, I am a strong applicant. I went on 20 interviews and think I did well. 3-4 programs have reached out about my PE score and I have notified them of my situation.

I am wondering if it is better that I should go ahead and update via ERAS, or enter rank without a PE score? My school advised that I only notify if asked, however others have told me to submit via ERAS. Any advice/guidance would be appreciated.

There are places that won't rank you at all without a passing CS score, so yes, submit your passing grade. The failure is immaterial at this point.

Many programs will not rank you if you don't have a passing CS score -- period. I was in a position where I took CS late and went to interviews. Two to three directors plainly said, "I would love to have you in our program, but we can't rank you without a CS score. We've taken risks on applicants and suffered the consequences." Aka, the applicant failed and couldn't start residency. In the end, I think most directors know that the CS is BS and just want to see the passing score. I wouldn't worry if you are a strong applicant with no other red flags. I don't remember updating ERAS -- I just emailed all the programs when I got my passing score.

This is something that could go either way. I did not submit cs before the deadline and no one cared, but that was years ago. I’ve seen programs penalize applicants with a failed cs even with a pass after, and I’ve seen programs penalize applicants that don’t have it yet.

As others have mentioned, a good number of programs require that you submit a CS score in order to be ranked. When I was applying, I think something like a third to half of the programs had this requirement.

If you're really worried about it, look at the requirements of the individual programs that you're applying to to see what is required. The failed attempt makes the decision a little more challenging, but you may not have much of a choice.

You would have to be exceptional, stellar in every other way, for us to rank you ahead of anyone with a completed application in February. Even then, you're going to be in the bottom 10%, if ranked at all. The failed exam is going to be there no matter what.

Maybe I should give this more attention, but I have almost never seen anyone fail CS so I haven't cared if anyone has it or not. CS wasn't a thing when I applied so I haven't given it any thought. It seems like a lot of applicants don't have it.

The trend is rapidly toward requiring CS for ranking. Any PD who has been burned in the past insists on it (this was the case in my home program as a med student). I would release your scores to the programs. I also would not count on being able to figure out which programs definitely require it from their written policies.

Your program may be in the minority, but when I applied, most of the programs required it for ranking and said so during interview day and that was years ago.

Submit...

Most programs won't care at this point if you are a US student...

Same (2016 match). Hell when I applied I didn't even need a CK score or CS pass to get an interview. Now, my program doesn't even interview anyone without a CK score.
