Accepted abstracts are notified in February, but my first choice schools will likely make acceptance decisions before then.

Is there anyway to send an update for this? Is it meaningless? Should I only submit if I'm waitlisted?

Yes, it's meaningless. So wait until you get the abstract accepted before using it as update fodder.
