Hey everyone,
Before I start my post, I just wanted to say that I did do a search, and found a lot of information on this topic very intriguing; I just want information specific to my situation.
Since I started my undergraduate education, I have always thought that I would really enjoy applying and going to medical school. The idea of medical school was always very close to me, but the actual process of taking the MCAT and applying always seemed very far away. Well, I took the MCAT in April and am have submitted my applications to both MD and DO schools. I have also started a job at our local hospital, and although the job is very interesting, I just don't feel the passion for it that I thought I would.
Now lets rewind... My wife and I met just before she started the dental hygiene program at our school. It is a very prestigious program (ranked in the top 3 in the US). Before her, I had never really even thought of becoming a dentist. However, the more involved she got in the profession, the more interested I became in it. I began to see how the practical aspect of dentistry was almost artistic-- Something I have always loved. I loved watching the impact she made on people just by performing an oral prophylaxis.
Now lets fast-forward... Last month, I submitted my applications. I literally have everything geared towards applying to medical school. My letters of Recommendation are specific to medical school, MY COMMITTEE LETTER is specific to medical school--- Everything is.
Any advice on this subject would be really appreciated, and I have the following questions:
-My GPA is about a 3.7 and I have a BS in Microbiology-- Is that competitive enough for dental school?
-Could I have my pre-health committee change my letter so it is specific to Dental school?
-I scored quite average on the MCAT after 3 months of studying. Could I realistically take the DAT and apply this year?
-Will any of the medical volunteering/clinical experience matter to dental schools?
-I am going to get in with the Dentists my wife now works for (to shadow), but how many shadowing hours should someone in my situation have? What else would my Dental application be lacking?
Thanks for your advice in advance, everyone. I really appreciate it!
