I have my DO application complete, the only thing I'm missing is a letter of recommendation from a DO physician (which the schools I'm applying to require). I just began shadowing a DO physician so I probably will not be able to get a letter from him for another few weeks. Am I able to submit my primary and have him send in a letter in a few weeks? Would the med schools just not look at the application until he sends it in?

Thank you for any help!

A DO letter is not required (at most programs), but a physician letter is. Do you happen to have a letter from a MD?

Having a DO letter will definitely help, but just having a MD letter will suffice for the majority of DO programs.
My top choice DO school’s website says they will accept an MD letter but upon acceptance I have to get a DO letter before being able to matriculate. None the less, I don’t have an MD or DO letter currently.

Then you should add a throw away school so your app can be verified. Once you get a DO LOR add other schools. This will be the best option for you.

I got into DO school without one. Be prepared to be grilled about it at interviews though.

I had interviews at 8 DO schools and never asked why I didn't have a DO letter! I wouldn't worry too much about not having a DO letter but definitely be prepared if a school does ask you.

I Would 100% apply without my DO letter if I could but the thing is this specific school absolutely requires one. It’s on the requirements on their website. I contacted admissions and they told me I would not even be considered for an interview if I did not have a letter from a physician. They said it could be MD or DO but I have to get a DO letter to actually matriculate even once accepted.

Got in without one. Neve asked why I didn't have one. Just be careful, some schools require it. Don't apply to them if you don't have it.

Edit: Read your response a little down the thread. Definitely get one then if you are attempting to get into a school that requires it.

Why can't they, (and me) just put all their schools in and complete secondaries even while waiting for the DO LOR? I'm in the same boat here...
