Hi everyone,

So some of my LORs were written with me going to med school in mind. Is it okay if I submit these LORs for other programs like an SMP? I'm nervous that if it brings up something like "so and so would be an excellent fit for medical school" or "i fully endorse this student for medical school" it might be strange for the admissions committee.

Do most people just get their LOR writers to write new ones?

TIA

at my school, there is a pre-health committee that collects the letter of recommendations and sends them to amcas. the committee told us that these letters can't be used for any other program other than medicine.

so i think it will be best for you to ask your school if they collect letters for you whether or not you can use them for other programs (some times it might be yes). if your school doesn't collect letters for you then it will be best to inform the people who will be writing letters of recommendations for you to address the letter in a general way instead of specifically geared toward med school.

or a much easier way is what you already pointed out. ask the writer to write new letter of recommendations addressing to SMP/med school.

ok thank you for your response 🙂

Given the fact that SMPs are specifically geared towards getting you an acceptance to medical school, I don't see why your previous letters of recommendation would be inappropriate. It might be worthwhile to explain the situation to your letter writers. You could then ask them if they think their letter is appropriate for the kind of program you are applying to.

i was thinking that... i'm going to visit my LOR writers and sort this out 🙂
