I am completely finished with my application for pharmcas. However I applied to the california board of pharmacy to obtain my pharmacy tech license (passed the PTCB in June) and it should be coming in the next week or two. Should I wait until I receive it to submit so I can list the license?

I'm asking because I read somewhere that certain schools will give you more points towards an interview/ admissions if they see you have a license? Seeing as how my GPA is lacking would this really help or is it just better to submit early? 😕

Having a tech license means you are a technician applying for pharmacy school. If you get a interview, you will have the opportunity to explain what it means to be a technician, and how being a technician has prepared you to become a pharmacist. Basically, it gives you something to talk about, and as a bonus, it is tangible and you can always fall back on it during your interview.

So yes, its nice to have a tech license, but it will never make up for a low gpa, and I also doubt it will play a significant role in getting you accepted or rejected because it is not a important criteria in the selection process.

good luck.

It's up to you. Waiting another week or two probably wouldn't really hurt you since you're still beating the September rush. But as mrblah said, just having the tech license for the sake of saying it won't help you too much compared to your GPA.

Far more influential than the fact you have a license is the experience you acquire on the job which you have yet to obtain. Make sure you're active about finding a job as it can be tough to land one in California. You probably want to have a reasonable amount of time working by the time you get to interviews.
