Subspecialty comparison

What are the major lifestyle differences from subspecialty to subspecialty? For example, I would assume the retina docs are more likely to be called in for emergencies (and also generally make more money), but any comments on the other subspecialties (e.g. cornea, neuro, peds)?

Also, I am somewhat interested in cornea, though nothing definite. How competitive is it to place if I am limited in location? Does it require research during residency?
