i've heard that it's possible to substitute in for English classes at med schools where English is a pre-req...does anyone know how to go about doing this officially with a school? i never took English in college and didn't place out with AP, but i took a number of courses that *may* pass as writing-intensive. is there a general guideline for how much writing was required, or does classification of witing-intensive really vary from school to school?

thanks guys!

I used two Spanish literature courses (taught in English) as my English pre-reqs. This has not been a problem at any school. But your best bet is probably to contact the school and explain your situation, and let them tell you how to best handle it.

If you feel that you took some classes, have the course descriptions/syllabus for the classes (i'm guessing you are referring to transfer credits?) that you took and bring them to your admissions to get your transcripts reevaluated. I did that to get all my english set up. I'm trying to get out of an intensive writing requirement and its not working so far. I think I might be able to swing it but its going to be a fight.

A couple of schools accepted my graduate school thesis in lieu of English 101 and 102. 😛 I don't know how common this is, however............

not transfer credit...i graduated from college already. but my school didn't have an english requirement, and i just happened to never take english while there! i wasn't pre-med throughout college, so it wasn't one of those things i thought i had to do.

anyway i guess the best idea is to give schools as much info as possible about the courses and see what they think!

Somewhere,
Im in the exact same situation as you right now. In fact, I just interviewed at a school last week and one day after the interview they sent me an email asking me what classes I took to fulfill their english requirement. They said the classes did not have to be taken in the english department but they should have been "writing intensive."
At the begining of this app process I was kinda worried this was going to happen. Anyway, I sent them an email back today detailing a couple of classes that I took in undergrad which I beleive should fulfill the requirement. Hopefully Ill hear back soon and when I do Ill let you know whats up.

Some schools are more sticklers for this requirement than others, and there are definitely places which will not waive the english requirement, and some that won't consider even comparable courses (eg. literature) if not offered by an english department. There is no general guideline for writing-intensive courses -- either a school decides they will accept what you've got and waive the requirement, or they won't. You may want to pick up an english course someplace between now and matriculation just in case.

I managed to substitute a religion class for my writing requirement and it wasn't a problem, but I'd call the individual schools to find out their specific preferences.

I ended up asking my pre-med office what to do. They had me go to the head of the American Studies department (my writing class was in that department) and ask him to write a letter stating that the course I took had a significant writing portion equivalent to what I would have been doing in an upper-division English class. Then I sent this to the schools that specifically requested post-AP coursework in English.
