What is the difference between pyranose and a hexose? I know a hexose is a 6 carbon ring, while a pyranose is a 6 member ring.

Does this mean that a sugar can be called both a hexose and a pyranose?

A hexose is a general name for a 6 carbon sugar while pyranose refers to the structural isomeric form that is arranged in a ring (that can be 6 membered where one member is an O).

Hexose can be straight chain OR in the ring form (which is the pyranose form). Alternatively, the pyranose can also be thought of as the hemiacetal form of a hexose sugar.
