I'm a MS1 and am wondering if anyone can offer suggestions about what I should be doing to "build" my application for Ob/Gyn residency. I'm especially trying to figure out how I should be spending my summer-- is research heavily emphasized for Ob/Gyn? Or should I try setting up a preceptorship? What about beyond MS1 summer?

Thanks!

I would like to know this as well.

Research would definitely be a benefit (though not required). You could also work in some sort of women's health capacity, either at a clinic or doing community outreach or international work. Another thing that would help you would be to join ACOG and your student interest group, and start getting involved in that way. Med Students 4 Choice is another organization that has crossroads with ob/gyn (if that is agreeable to you).

Really though, do what you want. Since this is the last true summer of your life, take at least a couple weeks for vacation and then do something useful and interesting the rest of the time. I was an anatomy TA, which people seemed receptive to at interviews. There are a lot of options.

From what I have heard, research can't hurt. Ob/Gyn, however, isn't at the point where you need to decide as a zygote. If academics is in your future, research would be smart, but you may not need to do it specifically in Repro or Ob/Gyn. Just completing a project would be great. Shadowing during the summer is also great because it isn't taking away study time. See if you can talk to the PD at your school for suggestions. Hopefully find some money to survive on as well 🙂
