Suggestions on items to prepare for first year?

Do you prefer the hand written planner? I’ve gotten so used to planning my life by outlook, but I know I’ll need more second by second planning with vet school. I just like reminders and paper planners cannot give that, but it might also help me keep everything in my brain that way too
Delayed response, but over the course of vet school I've actually switched from a long-time paper planner/calendar person to solely using my Outlook calendar. During second year I got really behind on actually writing things in my planner, and I also appreciate the reminders! It's super easy to get an email about something coming up, and quickly click over to the calendar and add it. I also have a Word document that I use to keep track of lectures that I need to review, and another with my study schedule for said lectures (which always gets changed around a lot, hence the digital format). Not fancy, but it works! I love the look of colorful, super detailed planners, but I can't keep up with them anymore.

Ouch I didn’t think about that. :/ that’s rough
With shipping plus the exchange rate it's a $70 planner. It had better be as good as you guys said!! (and also I pray my hubby never sees the bill!)

Ouch! That's rough... yikes there’s a lot of pressure now!!!! I liked it a lot but :scared:
It didn't specify what currency and I'd forgotten about the exchange rate. It should be arriving tomorrow. Their shipping is at least fast, even though it was $27 for a $43 item (Canadian). It was supposed to come today but I requested a different date because there'd be nobody home. The last thing I need after spending that much is to have the package swiped off my doorstep!

Wow that’s such a fast turn around!!! I order mine in like the middle of july when apparently everyone is ordering their planners so it takes a while to print!

It's here and it's beautiful... so glad I took the plunge!

I have an Australian Shepherd that I’ll be taking to school with me. Anybody else have a high energy breed with them while in vet school? Any tips/advice? Doggy daycare? He needs a good amount of mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis.

@finnickthedog do you know anything about having Australian Shepherds in vet school??

I found a great dog hiking/walking service on yelp. The owner or one of the people who work with her picks up my pup a few days a week, takes him for an hour-long hike in a pack of no more than five dogs, and then brings him home. Posts photos each day on ig, and also sends a personal report on how he did (with more pictures). Very much worth the expense.

Also, I’m not an Aussie expert as I just got my first 1 year old Aussie this year (if you have experience with men or house reactivity, I’m all ears) but I just got the Springer dog exerciser on Amazon. It’s a dog attachment for your bike so they can’t pull you or the bike over, and it keeps them out of the wheels. It usually gets him worn out pretty quick if I ride fast 🙂

Who, me? Idk man. 😛

Hi, yeah I have several Aussies. I'll come back later when I have a few free minutes and see if I have anything worth adding.

Will say I feel like living in a house with a fenced yard is the best decision I made though. It's really nice having a safe space where they can run off leash (leashed walks just dont tire them out unless they're long or I'm fast... and I'm not fast) and it's also nice to do some training out there when the weather is nice.

This sounds awesome! Now that the weather is starting to get nicer, I have been wanting to ride my bike with my husky, but wasn't sure how that would go if she starts to pull. She's used to running alongside me, so she might pick this up fast.

How do you like the Springer? Any close calls?

He LOVES it (especially because mama aint fast on foot, so he really gets to sprint) but like i said, he is pretty reactive and has never once came off of it or made me lose control when he was past threshold. It should be noted though that mine is somewhere between a mini and a standard aussie (36 lbs) so he can throw his weight around and it not get too crazy. I would recommend getting a carabiner on amazon too because the rope that comes with it is a literal shoe lace, the one I got is a recommended item for the springer on amazon 🙂 I have used it almost every day since I got it!

So when I got my dog (GSD/cattle dog/husky mix) in vet school I made it a point to always be in some sort of class with him. We went through a couple of obedience classes, a "reliable recall" class, and then flyball classes. Honestly it was money well spent because it forced me to devote at least 1 hour every week to dedicated training with him and it also forced me to take some time off from vet school studying etc because I'd paid for those classes so I was going to go! Also got very familiar with a nearby dog park (like every day for fetch) and we also did some biking on trails when the weather permitted. For biking that attachment looks awesome, but I just looped the leash around my waist and felt pretty secure even with my 55# dog on the other end because it was attached more to my center so harder to pull me off balance.

OMG THANK YOU to everyone recommending Plum Paper! I just spent some time on their website, and I think I know what I'm getting next. I'm a combo Google calendar/paper planner person, and the paper one I've been using has worked for now, but it likely won't going forward into rotations. I think I've just found exactly what I need.
Plum Paper is the greatest. I bought a Passion Planner for school, but have been debating the past few days about switching back over to Plum because I love them so much.
OMG I just googled Plum Paper and it is literally everything I could have ever wanted!!!! 😱 Thanks!
I'm intrigued by this Plum Paper things too. I've always felt like my schedule was too fluid for a pen-and-paper planner so in vet school I just used the calendar app on my Apple products...I liked that it automatically synched between my Macbook, iPhone, and (eventually) iPad so I always had the most recent version. I set it up with recurring events for the classes but could still easily drag them around when things got rescheduled. I used different colors to label classes (blue), extracurriculars (orange), work schedule (green), and exams (purple). It worked really well at the time.

Now I'm wondering about switching back to paper after residency is over in July. I'll probably have a Windows office computer and my Apple stuff at home, so I'll lose that seamless transfer. It might be good to have paper. Will have to think about this more in the next few months.
I ordered my Plum Paper Planner today for May 2019- MAY TWENTY TWENTY AKA WHEN I START CLINICS HOLY ****.

I'm in love with my cover- I adjusted it to make it SDN friendly but it obviously has my real name. I went bold and went with the A5, the smaller size in a different internal design than I usually get. I'm excited to try it! I got really tired of drawing boxes and wanted to see if I could accomplish more in less space/ better designed space.

Oh I also got this absolutely precious pen holder that wraps around the planner and it's the same color turquoise as the 2019-2020

At TAMU we get free stethoscopes first year from the TVMF!

rubber boots for LA anatomy, 2 lab coats (one for anatomy, one clean one for other labs), work boots (like ariat or similar) if you don’t want to wear rubber boots to do labs with live large animals, we do have a dress code for lectures so business casual clothes, scrubs if you don’t have any to wear to anatomy/other labs, small/pocket calculator with no graphing functions. You’ll need a non-smart watch for labs- it can be digital or analog. I would hold off on any books because you can find out from the 2VMs which books to actually buy. They put some on the list you won’t use. There will be a supply list go out this summer for everything you need but those are just random things i’ve thought of that may or may not be on there!
Curious, what is the reason for no smart watches at your school? I love my Fitbit Versa...

We can't have them during tests due to people being able to access cloud based notes and such.
Interesting-makes sense though. I guess it would be obvious if you ask me if people were looking up notes on their watch which is maybe why it's not a thing here or maybe no one has thought about it. Personally though wouldn't wanna wear a smart watch anyway because of all the grossness regardless if it's anatomy or palpating cows

It’s also for the texting factor. notifications can pop up on it!

"The one"? Pshh, gimme a break. I bet you'll use it and discard it after a year or so. 🙄
Now, now... it's not nice to assume! I believe in reincarnation....

Ending first year this is what I have: 256GB 12.9” iPad Pro (2018) with the 3rd gen pencil, airpods (or any Bluetooth alternative for iPad), a Snugg keyboard case, Rocketbook Everlast x3 different sizes (use executive most frequently), stethoscope, white coat x1, nametag, different colored scrubs (blue and green), coveralls and boots (for bovine labs), plumb’s app and Merck app on my iPad/phone.
I used to have a paper planner but slowly phased out of it to just my outlook calendar, since MWU gives us a way to add it to our electronic calendars, I ended up just relying on that and adding club activities, etc. as necessary. My rocketbook I use pretty frequently in replacement of real notebooks, I’ll watch videos on my iPad/computer and take hand-written notes on the rocketbook, send it to my OneDrive (upload to notability if desired) and then just wash off the page! One of my classmates recommended it to me and it’s changed my world
I have a digital and a smartwatch, I mainly use the smartwatch for work since I can’t have my phone on the floor with me, if an ER happens to my SO or if I need immediate access to a calculator (but for some reason they’re all missing all the time) then I have one. I do have to take it off during exams, but we can’t wear digital watches in exam rooms either so it’s not much different in that aspect. And I pulled my glove over it during anatomy labs, any genuine lab (like rectal palpations) we couldn’t have anything on our hands/arms anyway.

I had the same exact thought. Like, it's not sneaky

On a regular sit down exam, it would be hard to be sneaky, on a lab exam, less so - realized that while giving one this year. I think a girl was just glancing at an alert, but I was like, dang... that's hard to spot in here. Kept an extra close eye for it just in case.

Never heard of Rocketbook, but I just checked it out. Looks interesting! Except my worry is I'll lose the cloud backup and have nothing, whereas if I took pictures of a regular paper notebook, I'd always have a paper version if the digital version crapped out, or I wanted to review my notes without staring at a screen.

It automatically saves the scan in the app to help prevent losses. You can also send it to your email, google drive, Evernote,Dropbox, onenote, trello, slack, box, iCloud, and text. I use slack for club events, so being able to send it through there is super convenient too!
The screen aspect doesn’t bother me since all my other notes are on my screen. I typically scan it into notability so I can airdrop to my classmates. I use rocketbook for clinic aspects too where I can’t have my iPad, but want to keep it with all my other notes.
If I didn’t use only my iPad, then I could see how looking at a screen would suck. But it’s saved me so much on paper and pens!
Technology crapping out is always scary, had that happen this week (long story short needed a new iPad) and was just thankful I could make it happen right before finals.

Ive been wanting to get a Rocketbook for a while. You may have convinced me!

Any advice for coming to terms with the vet school debt load? I'm torn between being excited to start and terrified about accruing more debt than I've ever had. That compounded with the fact that I'm leaving a career job is kind of dragging me down.

You either decide to go with it or don’t. Figure out what that means for you financially 4 yrs down the line and accept it. Once you make your decision, you just forget about it. Once you start school you won’t have time to think about it anyway.

Does anyone use a budget app/software that they love?
I downloaded mint maybe 3 months ago but it's meh

Happy with Excel since I was 22, since it gives me total freedom to do what I want plus doesn't invade my privacy (via allowing a 3rd party access to my detailed financial records in order to provide an aggregating service) nor invade my security (via providing passwords to a 3rd party). Each checking or savings account or credit card gets its own worksheet ("tab"), and the first tab is an "Overview" tab that pulls in the balances from every account. I have a tab to track my rent, another for my credit scores (with graph), another for my quarterly Net Worth tracking (with graph), another for vehicle maintenance logs, another for all Student Loans, another for precious metals tracking. I built this workbook over many years, and I'm much better with Excel now than I was when I started, but even getting started as a beginner is very easy since basic stuff like the SUM function are easy to pick up.

If you're not a fan of Intuit Mint, you can try Yodlee and Personal Capital. In the past, I've recommended YNAB to others who need to learn the ropes and develop discipline. I don't recommend EveryDollar simply because I don't recommend Dave Ramsey.

Why not? I only know a smidge about him so I’m just curious why you don’t recommend him
Kinda on my way out. I'd want to spend at least 20 minutes responding to this, but can't. There's a good FatWallet rebuttal/analysis of The Total Money Makeover and other principles, but FatWallet closed. I'd have to search around for the really good analysis.

I dislike how he equates credit with debt. They're not the same at all. In other words, having available credit (e.g. via a credit card) doesn't automatically mean that the cardholder will irresponsibly revolve the balance. I have close to $300,000 in available credit, and I revolve literally $0.00 per month since I Pay in Full (PIF), and I profit from hundreds of dollars to thousands of dollars in credit card rewards every year! And I'm a single guy. I'd be raking it in if I were married +/- kids. I understand how those with poor discipline should fix their self-control issues first (of course!), but to force those views onto those who do have discipline is both arrogant and dishonest. He's misleading people.

I dislike most of his investing advice, since his 12% annualized returns is unrealistic. His Asset Allocation is meh, and I'm worried that his sheep will follow it by the letter instead of thinking of their own personal and family situation on how to invest for retirement. Dave Ramsey's forte is really on getting people with self-control problems out of debt. He's weak as a whole on personal finance, especially teaching about credit and investing.

I dislike his arrogance and how he treats some of his callers like ****. The yelling and screaming and degrading insults.

I dislike how he's so adamant about paying off debts from lowest balance to highest balance, ignoring interest rate.

I dislike how he charges to use his forums. And the hypocrisy that he's so against credit cards, but his forums accept credit cards. He answers that people should be using debit cards, but that argument doesn't hold water since you can accept debit transactions through the Automated Clearing House (ACH), but when you use a debit card through the Visa/MasterCard networks, you are quite literally using it as a credit card. He just wants the profit and hypocrisy be damned.

Not to mention that using debit cards -- speaking as a victim -- opens someone up more easily to liability and fraud if the debit card is misused. Because then it's your money that was stolen that you have to stress over getting back. With credit cards, it's the bank's money that was stolen, so they have more incentive to go after the bad guy(s) + most issuers have a $0 fraud liability promise, whereas debit cards have less favorable rules to follow to recover your money. Debit card? The bank can tell you to bugger off, just as mine did. Same with paying for airfare, hotel, and rental car: using debit is much riskier and many businesses require credit over debit.

I dislike -- speaking as a Christian -- how he preys (and profits!) on the ignorant Christians by offering Financial Peace University in church (either during Sunday School or through an evening program) and that it costs money for knowledge that is free. It disgusts me to use the church to transact money like this. I'd feel better if FPU were free if he's going to go after the church crowd who look up to him as some savior without flaw. He has amassed a fortune by inserting his business during church.

I've read that he functions like an alcoholic or drug addict in that ALL credit is ALWAYS bad. It's way too black-or-white, all-or-nothing. Just because he personally had discipline and self-control problems and got burnt doesn't mean that his philosophy applies to all humans.

I really, really am repulsed at the cult mentality some of his followers espouse on the Web, where any criticism is met with the nastiest attacks from them. It's mob mentality vs. using critical thinking to be able to objectively analyze the tenets.

I recognize the value he brings to those who are completely ignorant to personal finance and who have problems with discipline/self-control. So I recognize that many, many people have followed his advice from The Total Money Makeover and Financial Peace University to get out of debt. Bravo! More power to them! I also -- from listening to his radio program -- appreciate a lot of his entrepreneurial and business owner advice. It's just some of his basic advice is either misleading or downright incorrect, and I am repulsed by his arrogance, his predation on the church community, and the nasty cult-like mentality of some of his followers.

So, I use YNAB (You Need a Budget) @muttmanager
It's really great, if you actually keep up with it lol
I feel attacked jk, I downloaded it, definitely seems more interesting than mint. Thanks!

There's a ton of free articles on the YNAB website too and intro to their budgeting concepts. I've incorporated some of the ideas (like keeping a buffer, even in checking account). Others I differ, like I keep each goal in its own savings account (vacation, emergency fund, new car, wedding/honeymoon/first house, moving fund, etc.) instead of tracking them in YNAB software but co-mingling the different goals in one account (just messy imo). I say -- with any philosophy -- learn from and take all the good concepts and ignore the weird or the bad. 😉

If you're a cheapskate frugal af and a stubborn power user, you'll maybe wanna break up with Mint/Yodlee/YNAB/etc after a year or two and go on your own.

I work with some layouts (someone else made) that seem similar to what you described, if this app doesn't work out I'm likely going give in and use Excel.
It's "free" too (other than paying for it if not a student I guess) and hasn't let me down. The blank screen is intimidating, but I look at it like a canvas for creativity. I ran into frustration due to my own ignorance and growing pains with learning new functions (SUMPRODUCT, VLOOKUP, arrays, nested if statements, all sorts of fun formulas, conditional highlighting) I should probably make my 13-year-old (i.e., older than ____ 😛 ) spreadsheet a template for others to use.

I added things where it calculates minimum payment on each credit card and when it's due. Highlights the card yellow if I haven't used it in 6 months, all sorts of cool stuff. It's empowered me to pay off $43-44k of credit card debt, save up... $xyz for retirement and savings, pay down $35k student loans and counting (technically a lot more than that but the interest is suffocating), calculate each paycheck's tax withholding, 401k, SS, Medicare, parking, etc. so I know to the penny how much a paycheck will be. The sky's the limit, but the hardest part is getting started and learning the nerdy skills over time. Which come in handy in the "real world" but not sure how nerdy vets need to be with data analysis... Maybe researchers I guess?

/rave :luck: though, find what works for you to give you as much peace as possible over your monies to use as a tool to benefit you instead of as a weapon used against you and future/current partner. 😎

I know this may differ by school but I’m starting to look into different supplies that others have found useful during vet school? Any suggestions would be great but specifically I know a lot of vet students have IPads which they say has helped them tremendously. Any advice on note taking apps that are good? I usually just print out my powerpoints and write on them but I feel as though I should be transferring to something electronic to save paper. Thanks in advance!

Depends on your schools requirements. I use an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil for notes and love it. The app I use is notability and is great and lots of others on here with iPads love it too. I used to print powerpoints and write on them and that’s what I do with my iPad and notability. At my school though, they don’t let us use the iPad version of examsoft (idk why), so I still have to bring my laptop when we have exams, but just typing notes on a computer doesn’t work for me.

I just ordered a Surface Go and have been looking into the different kinds of screen protectors (tempered glass, plastic, self-healing, etc.) Does anyone have any input/suggestions on this?

And how many GB do you think is sufficient? I guess I can always save stuff to a portable hard drive and delete from the ipad if it ever becomes a problem

Notability for sure.

Get the biggest one you can. I just finished second year and my 64 GB is full.
