lol i heard that too from my freind that it's the new researchs where di you got these info ?

although ~16% of dentist retire bc of neurosis or neurotic symptoms 😀

burke et al 1997

Million people die by suicide annually, more than those murdered or killed in war. In this country it is the 11th leading cause of death. If it makes you fell less scared, more physicians die from suicide than dentists.

It used to be true.
It's not the true.

What I got on statistics from my psycho classes are :

Hypertension and coronarian disease are 25% more likely to happen to a dentist
Between 10% and 20% of American dentists are addicted to drugs (alcool, marijuana...)
7 out of 10 Dentists will die from a cardiovascular disease related to stress
Highest divorce percentage

This article is cited as reference
Gerschman, J, A; Burrows, G, D. (1998). Stress and distress in dentistry. Stress Medicine. Vol 14(4), 213-217.

I'm not on the VPN right now so I can't look at it.

Dentists have the highest divorce rate? I dont think so, why would they?

Simple, generally speaking by the nature of the profession, we're micro-managing control freaks. And some in the profession can't leave that trait "in the office" at the end of the day and take it home to one's spouse, who may or may not like that trait.

Also, the very fact that at least anecdotally you'll hear probably a patient a week say in a tongue and cheek manor something to the extent of "no offense Doc, but I hate you" and for some docs, that negative image that they here directed towards themselves over and over and over can stick. Once again it can be something that a spouse may not appreciate and can affect a relationship.

Lastly, and this is more so of a male dentist. You're generally speaking working in an office filled with female employees, and sometimes one's spouse can get jealous of that.

All those can put a certain amount of strain on a relationship from time to time, heck, in my 12 years of marriage, I can attest that all 3 things above can and do happen every now and then. Just like almost any relationship though, you need to work on it to keep it successfull.

No its not at all true. Its simply a rumour. Why they will do so and from where you heard it.

Is it true that more medical students are depressed and suicidal than dental students? Here, the med students seem like lifeless zombies.

I would think that higher suicide rates and drug use are probably more related to access to harm. Pop on some Nitrous at the end of a hard day...have your Pharmacist/Dentist friends write and fill prescriptions for you... These worst case scenarios both have happened in my town recently.

I don't think there are more depressed people in dentistry, only more ways to deal negatively with it.

dentists stress level is comparable to librarians.
and have have a suicide/divorce rate comparable to any other profession (no statistical significance)

IUSD had a dental day where they gave us a packet with a bunch of stats. this was one of them from a scientific study. I dont have it anymreo or i would say where it was from
