Sorry to encroach on your all's turf, but I thought this community may be able to help me. I promise to make unsubtle corny jokes throughout this post to help ameliorate any blood I may boil 😉

I am about to start a residency at an institution that requires residents to wear suits day in and day out. The good news is that I only own one suit and have fashion sense comparable to Steve Erkel on a bad day.

On rotations, I noticed a large amount of physicians wearing suits albeit some were not what I would describe as my taste. With that being said, I feel that physicians on this forum may be suitable (eh? eh?) to help me out.

Are there any places you recommend to get sharp looking suits that are reasonably priced (please keep in mind I'm on a resident salary)? What colors are professional, yet unique in a patient care setting? I don't try to be gaudy, but I also do not want to have a pH of 13 or higher. In addition, I want the suits to have some versatility outside of the hospital as I'm 26 years old, and my friends are beginning to get married at an alarming rate!

Any experiences with places like Joseph A. Bank, Men's Warehouse, or Indochino? Any other places you recommend? Thank you all for your your help!

I've only ever bought a handful of suits, and currently only own two (black/navy), but they are always from JCPenney/Macy's and never were more than $100-$120 (last one was on sale for $75). They are quality suits, have a modern fit, and very comfortable.

I also keep about 10 shirts ($20-$30 each on sale at Express/H&M and probably 25-30 ties (all well under $15 from Burlington clearance) so it's easy to keep things fresh.

Not sure what your budget is but these might be some good places to look.

IMO, if you're looking at affordable suits it's less important where you get it from and more important that you take them to a good tailor. I'd rather wear a suit I found at goodwill and got tailored, than a ill-fitting $2K one.

Step 1. find an outlet mall close to you.
Step 2. Buy a good quality suit at the outlet mall
Step 3. Have the suit tailored for alterations, legs, arms are what you should be doing, so the suit should fit in other locations.
Step 4. Profit? ???

OFF sak's fifth, Nordstrom Rack, and Neiman marcus outlets will have good quality stuff and you can pick up something great for about 500 without sales and close to 300 when sales are going on.

IMHO These are not quality suits. They are not 100% wool, usually are rayon and a fused contsruction. They may look nice initially but people who wear good suits can tell a macy's JCpenney suit from a mile away.

I'm sure some can tell but we are in medicine, not the corporate world. 😉 I would rather keep several hundred in my wallet than worry about the very small fraction of people who would be able to tell the difference. To each their own.

Thrift stores!

Suitsupply selection are so beautiful and modern. Depending on where you are, they have in-store alterations and $399 can get you a set that can be worn in multiple different occasions without looking like a divorced dad. Good luck!

Go look in thrift stores, especially seek out stores that are in more upscale neighborhood areas. I got a full Ann Taylor (I'm a woman) suit the other day for less than $20 and it looked like it had hardly ever been worn!

Slightly off topic, but all next month men's warehouse will give you 50% off your next suit if you turn in a (gently) used suit. It's really great for people like me who've gotten too fat to wear their suits since they interviewed👍

This x100. I got my suits at MW and took them to a tailor. Made a $150 suit look 5 times as nice.
