I know this has been answered here and there but I thought we could put it into one thread.

What subjects are FA sufficient for?

I understand that FA can be too concise sometimes but do people read supplementary materials to understand what is in FA or to actually add to their arsenal of memorized facts?

Step 1 Graduates: advice would be appreciated!

1. Do a search. You'll get all of your answers in much more detail than what I'm laying out.
2. Every subject should be annotated to the degree that you feel you need.
3. In general, I think pharm, anatomy and behavioral is just fine.
4. Biochem, Micro, Path and Phys probably need more input based upon your strengths/weaknesses.

There was another thread that suggested Levinson (LANGE) for Immunology. I read it and it was absolutely amazing. FA is bare bones for immunology.

But was it enough?

I dont think immuno for FA is enough. It barely tells you what a granuloma is, or other key things. I would definitely spend the time to read another source for immuno. I havent taken the test thoguh so I cant tell you whats on the actual thing.

I didn't think it was enough. No mention of VDJ recombination, no mention of CTLA4, nk cells and their role in tumor cells, etc, etc. Supplement it with something. Levinson was written in a way that I didn't feel like it was necessary to annotate FA, it just seemed to stick.

kaplan immuno videos are amazing IMO. I knew like zero immuno and after watching them I get almost all immuno stuff right
btw I have never annotating ANYTHING into first aid and dont plan to. I used different sources and thats that.

I read the little Abul Abbas book for immuno, it was solid. Immuno isn't that high yield though, I really think FA is plenty. Just know the IL's, basics of immune response, different Ig's, the diseases listed, and the transplant/autoimmune reactions. Not to say that reading Levinson isn't a good idea, but if you're limited on time, I think it's better spent elsewhere.

pg 196---> antibody diversity is generated by 1. Random ''recombination of VJ (light chains) or VDJ ( heavy chains).

And all different types of cells you have mentioned have more to do with immunology than pathology (tumors).

FA immunology is a thousand times better than the average. Dont underestimate it

Biochem: Depends on your background since FA is great for review, but not as good for learning. So if you learned it well the first time then FA is enough.

Immunology: See above.

Psych/Beh Sci: FA is definitely enough. Don't waste money on another resource.

Embryology/Anatomy: FA is probably enough, provided you also do UW

Micro: Probably ok for review. Definitely recommend CMMRS for learning the material.

Pharm: Probably enough as long as you don't mind making your own flash cards.

Organ systems: Better to use BRS Phys + RR Path/BRS Path. I didn't spend too much time studying FA for these topics.

Which FA mnemonics are funny, memorable, helpful, and/or worth knowing, other than the 2nd-messengers mnemonic in the Pharmacology section?

Yeah, I couldn't think of any either.
