What are you guys' plans for the summer before medical school? I'm working on booking a week in Hawaii with my girlfriend. Maybe some other sort of vacation as well. If I do end up attending LMU I will be starting end of July. So I need to squeeze in as much summer as I can until then!

Some non-US resort for mad inebriation. Really just to gear up for medical school...😵

BTW congrats @SynapticDoctah on the hitching event.

Dude. I have no idea. Would be nice to find a beach somewhere for a couple weeks. . .

Month-ish in Sweden, getting married, and then taking my sweet time driving across the country as I move from the West Coast to the East Coast.

how much is your Hawaii trip going to cost? I'm looking to book one too.

Totally and shamelessly working on my backlog of video games and recreational reading. As far as something mildly productive, I will be *trying* keep to a decent workout regimen...because...well, as others in the thread have mentioned...OMM lab.

Flying from California so probably $800 for the flight and another $1,000 for hotel. I'm planning on staying for a week. Total probably a little over $2,000.

Getting hitched in July + honeymoon
reading some books
working out in order to look good for OMM
working to make some cash
Congrats on getting married! Is your significant other making the move with you for school?

How is it possible to "take summer off" with bills and coming up with $$ to move. I am working 2 jobs to barely stay afloat. And getting married, but sigh.

I can take summer off because I have no dependents or rent to pay, so I'm one of the lucky ones. Just tack the summer bills onto your medical school loans! Jk...maybe.

To everyone getting married: mazel tov! Probably the only thing you'll do that's both more challenging and more rewarding than med school. Me, I'm going to relax and spend what free time I have left for the next six plus years with my lovely better half.

Which part? The major cities in Cali have $500-$600 dollar tickets to Hawaii. Unless you are also going to the outer islands also then that price sounds reasonable.

I will continue working until about 2 months before med school starts, during that time I hope to spend lots of time with my family and backpack Germany for a month. Getting an American Advantage credit card to pay for traveling expenses to interviews has allowed me to rack up quite a few miles and I intend to use them. And of course binge on Netflicks and video games on my days off. I just hope that I can find the motivation to get to the gym so I can look good for school!

This is hilarious, we should start a thread of people who will be backpacking through europe. I have still yet to decide but I may be in Spain for a month.

We totally should!

Hope you get through your backlog! I feel like I spend way more time playing than most med students, and yet my backlog still grows hopelessly 🙁

Another fellow "victim" of Steam sales by chance? I tell you, its like those games knock me down and jump into my game library on their own:whistle:.

Nope just Xbox 🙁 i want to get into PC gaming but I just have a Mac laptop. Once I'm actually a doctor I'll get a gaming PC and then will add decades worth of PC games to my backlog lolol. I primarily play either RPGs or RPG-like FPSs (Deus Ex, Far Cry, etc) so with as massive as those games are it seems like at least 2 or 3 games come out in the time it takes me to finish one game 🙁

I always wondered...

If I wanted to do this the summer after OMS-1 is there a way to use left over loans from the academic year? Like Grad Plus loans?
I obviously won't be making any money during school, so how do people fund vacation/traveling?

Yeah those are my favorite type of games too. I loved DE:HR and the Far Cry series, though where I have really sunk obscene amounts of time are the Fallout games and the Elder Scrolls series. I actually set up a new PC build a month or so ago that will be going with me to school just in case I get some free time 😉.

Got to love Bethesda games. Have you played ESO? I'm trying to decide if I should get that when it comes out on consoles this summer. I'm currently taking on Dragon Age Inquisition in my 1-2 hour chunks of free time so that will probably last me the rest of my life.

I can't imagine racking up a few grand in debt just to relax before medical school. I don't see how you guys are planning for Europe trips like it's nothing lol. Nor do I see how you can just take the entire summer off, wish I was that lucky haha.

Agree, tax return, saving up some money, lots of acquired airline miles. Really the most expensive part is just the plane tickets, its actually not too bad spending wise once you are there. Hostels are cheap, usually they have kitchens that you can use (for a very small fee), public transportation is cheap, also if you have family or friends that you can bum on the couch for a few days. There is also couch-surfing and that can get you in contact with some really cool people.

I also don't understand setting up your taxes so that the government can gain interest off of them the entire year you're working instead of just setting up your deductions (or whatever it's called... idk taxes very well lol... how many dependents you claim or how much you have them withhold) so that YOU have your money during the year to be paying off debt, etc.

Is the hotel all inclusive or something?

Tax Returns are good. Depending on your situation, budgeting it out works the best. I set my loan money refund up in it's own account and it auto-transfers into my checking every two weeks, like a paycheck. If you are wanting to use a lump sum, take it out as soon as you get your funds, and stick it in an account that you wont touch. take the rest and divy it up by month, 2 weeks etc.to last until the next loan funds come (usually the 1st week of the semester)

I worked up to the week before school started, then had a family emergency. No break for me. Praying for summer to get here-I need a beach and an umbrella drink!

debating starting a dual MPH program in the summer, vs chilling in the summer and maybe go to mexico?

My buddy and I rode across the United States on bicycles the summer before I started.. Now I'm in my third year and it's really sinking in that the trip was most likely a once in a lifetime experience going into this career.. I would strongly advocate doing something you may never get a chance to do again..

Loans are very confusing, this definitely puts it in perspective though.

Thanks for the feedback. And sorry to hear about your situation, you'll just have to make up for it this summer:smuggrin:

I think in many ways it's just a matter of your personality/priorities. Personally, I can't imagine wasting my final free months for who knows how long toiling in a meaningless job. Especially as a physician (which we'll all become), money isn't hard to come by. But experiences are.

I've gone completely broke several times by spending everything I had on vacations. It has been worth it every single time. The money will return. The chances to experience those moments again will not.

Honolulu. Bunch of hidden fees, just booked yesterday. It ended up being $960 for both tickets.

No, it is a decently nice hotel though. Price is about $150/night. Still looking to see if I can find something slightly cheaper.

How long was this trip?! Sounds pretty fun! and how many states did you cross?

$70 fee to add another suitcase, but sure!

I can't decide when to quit my job 2 months before school starts or 3? hmm tricky. I also have to go through a breakup with my SO or 3 years before I leave. I went to an OMM DO a few weeks ago for treatment and he told me to quit very soon and travel. The thing is I don't really want to travel alone though
Completely understand as I'm in the same boat. I don't even like going to a bar alone, I don't think I'd be able to travel alone.
