How many prerecs can you take in the summer before adcoms start to look down on it? Any summer classes that I take will be at an actual university, IUPUI, located in the heart of Indianapolis. I'm just trying to get a brief idea so I can start to map out a tentative schedule. Thanks.

Just an FYI, if you're not a full time student at IUPUI and you're majoring in some sort of science at your regular university, you probably won't be able to take any core major requirements outside of your university. This is how it works at most schools so, for example, biology majors can't take organic chemistry at a community college to try and get an easy A instead of at their 4 year institution.

If you're taking the classes because you actually attend IUPUI or if you're a non science major, it should be fine. Summer classes aren't seen as inferior as compared to Fall and Spring.

If anything, It should be considered harder. In my case, 6 weeks, 3 classes is a killer.

and that 👍

Summer courses may be harder, but I doubt adcoms would be more generous or more impressed with a student because they chose to take organic chemistry over a shorter time span. Maybe someone can clarify or correct me, though.

My premed advisor told me flat out to take my pre-req's during the semester year and not the summer. He told me to take other courses for my business major in the summer. Regardless I still plan on taking just Orgo I+II in the summer.

Think about it, they want to see that you can handle the science courses. Which is harder --taking them by themselves in the summer or taking them with other courses during a full year?

I don't think there is anything wrong with taking one set of pre-req's during a summer for the sake of convenience.

Also keep in mind that summer's leave no room for error, if you fall behind or miss just one class, you are pretty much in a lot of trouble.

Through IUPUI, you can take a lot of actual IU courses...IUPUI is a joint college between Indiana University and Purdue University. So many classes will be open to take. If I can't I'll probably stay at my university for a summer.

The real question that I am asking is after how many summer courses does it start to look bad. If I took three prerecs in the summer, for example, would adcoms find it to be a weakness on my application?

What I'm really trying to do is open up my schedule so that I have the possibility of minoring/majoring in political science along with a bio major and Spanish minor. As I am an entering freshman, me and my advisor are trying to work stuff out. Even with summer classes, however, it may not work out.

I don't think it impresses them more than semester classes- I just agreed it should

I've heard summer classes at some schools can be informal, easy and taught by TA's, so adcoms frown upon them.

I think everyone answered your real question: no, it doesn't matter.

If you are taking them at a university and not opting to do them at a community college, its fine.
