Here's my situation - I'm a senior graduating in a couple of days. As it stands now, my bcp is terrrrible (I haven't calculated it exactly, but I'm guessing it's hovering around a 2.2). I plan on re-taking some of my worse classes at local college this summer which would hopefully bring me within the cut-off GPA of schools I'm interested in (NYCOM, LECOM). I scored a 24 on the MCAT. Would it still be in my best interest to apply in June/July with my stats and update them with my new grades or hold off until my grades from my summer classes come in around late August? I still want to give it a shot and apply this cycle - I'll continue to take classes through the year, though, if I don't get in now and reapply if needed. Thanks in advance for your advice!

When do the summer courses end? If you apply early, I wonder about whether DO schools would disregard your application before you had the chance to release your summer courses. Just a thought...

nycom has minimum GPA requirements of 2.75
I'm not sure if your application would even be looked at, but you can call AACOMAS or NYCOM/LECOM

if your gpa is below their cutoff, then there's no benefit to applying early anyway, since you're not in their range. Something that people sort of forget about... is you can have your app totally ready to go, just waiting to be transmitted.... you can even already have your transcripts already sent to them. That way, when you hit transmit, everything is ready to go.

Plus, if things don't work out /c the summer school plans, you save yourself a bunch of money. 2.2 is reallllly low, unless you don't have many bcp classes, that's going to take some effort to raise. Be prepared to deal with questions regarding academics in your applications/personal statements.

Lily06 i think you are my twin! Well, i had around a 2.4 BCPM gpa right out of undergrad. I did a post bacc program (basically retaking all the undergraduate premed courses at another school) and got all A's. Those 30-35 credits of A's boosted my science gpa to a 3.0. I would hold off on the AACOMAS this year and focus on you gpa which you can bring up alot..believe me you can! take the year to do a post bacc program and apply next summer '07. Plus, maybe focusing only on those pre-med courses will help you if you wanted to retake the MCAT again. I myself applied this past year with a 23 mcat...i had an interview at tucom and was waitlisted there..i really hope to get in! So i hope my story gives u some insight and good luck! 🙂

The best of luck on TUCOM. I'm going to be applying there. I've been trying to look up information about the area but the school website doesn't give me too much. What have you heard about the area?

Well, in the beginning i was hearing negative things about TUCOM location-wise. But when i went there for my interview, i completely changed my mind. The school is in Vallejo which seems a little desolate (i'm from the chicago area so i may be biased in terms of what i consider desolate ). The campus itself is under a lot of construction, but it still is a very beautiful campus. Students generally live off campus in surrounding areas such as Benicia. Vallejo itself is going under major construction and they are building $750K homes there. So i think that the area itself has alot of potential to be really great even if it doesnt appear so right now. The nice thing about TUCOM is that its is close to San Fran..but still far enough so that you wont get distracted 😉 I personally would love to move to california and TUCOM has some great opportunities for rotation sites and their students have great residency placements and board scores. You can get that link also by going to www.tu.edu then click on 'current students'...there is a link for MISL (mare island student life).
