Hi everyone.

I'm just starting out on some DIY post-bacc work with a course in medical sociology and ethics (hopefully helpful for MCAT 2015). My school is on the quarter system, and summer registration is now open, but with a somewhat limited selection of classes. I plan to take chem and physics starting in the fall, but I'm not sure what to do in the mean time.

Option A:
Statistics

Option B:
Intro to Bio

Option B is different than the Bio requirement, it's more of a non-major course, BUT it would open up the field for next summer, when I could take an upper level Bio (where either non-major bio or regular Bio I is a pre-req). I would then take Bio I, II, III in the fall, winter and spring, respectively.

I do have some GPA repair to do, so my thought process is that it might be good to get more upper level bio's under my belt. Then again, the intro bio doesn't help me much there, just opens it up later.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

Is the Intro to Bio course a pre-req for Bio I? Otherwise, it's not clear to me why you'd take it (since you say Bio I satisfies the pre-req for upper-level courses). Wouldn't you take Bio I in the fall no matter what?

Both are fine. You'd want a fairly solid math background before you do stats.

Thanks for the feedback!

Intro Bio is not a pre-req for Bio I, but would allow me to take an upper level bio course during the summer before I start my regular Bio + lab sequence. I definitely will be taking Bio I in the fall of 2014 regardless, so the question is whether or not I take a low level bio now to be able to fit in an upper level bio during summer of 2014. Or take coursework in another area (statistics).

I have successfully taken calculus I & II and a very basic stats for business course, so I'm hoping it wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

You've already taken Calc 1+2 and a business stat. course, so your math requirements should be covered at nearly every U.S. medical school. Take the intro bio (assuming this will be your first ever bio course), and if this is your first ever bio course, it'll provide a backdrop once you hit major level bio.
