I am going to have to take Gen Chem in the summer to get caught up since I didn't take it freshman year. However, I have read on USC's page that they "strongly prefer non-summer courses for pre-reqs". If I take this Gen Chem to get caught up, how will it affect my application? Are other schools like that as well?

I can't really say. Of the pre-reqs, none of my "major" ones were over the summer. The only ones I took over the summer were Speech 111 (Interpersonal Communications) and General Psychology.

It says they strongly recommend that you don't. It doesn't say that they won't accept the credit or anything of that sort. Why would they offer a summer chemistry if they didn't want someone to talk it? You might go talk to the advisors and ask them how it will affect your app.

Well USC isn't offering a summer course on it. I live in NYC and can probably find almost at least half of major classes(Gen Chem, Bio, Physics, ect.) in the summer. I was actually recommended to take it in the summer by my school's pre-med advisor. It will get me back on pace to take the MCAT junior year, if I decide to do that.

I think you should take these classes in summer, since you have to. It will help with test prep and get you up to speed with the rest of the courses.

Just make sure all the rest of your pre-reqs are taken during long semesters (like ochem, cell bio, anatomy.....). Plus, if you get all As in all of your pre-reqs, I am sure they will not care when u took them.

So i believe that this won't hurt your application. Did not hurt mine.....

I'm willing to bet that they recommend not doing it over the summer because:

a) it's a prereq
b) it could be more difficult to do well in a condensed class
c) they don't take into account semester when looking at prereqs, ie. if you do poorly they won't say, "Oh, well it was during summer session, those are harder"

This is exactly what happened to me. I took General Chem II over summer and I applied to USC and they email me saying that my pre-reqs are not complete and I should take GChemII if I get accepted 🙁 But I already took it over summer. And I can't take it in spring because I am taking Biochem and alot of other classes so I am in big trouble. I am going to call them on monday and I'll let you know what they tell me.

Yea please do post back, I'd love to know what they say.

I was actually recommended by my schools pre-med advisor to take it in the summer, so I mean, let's see what happens with USC.

did you ever get around to contacting them today?

I'm really interested to hear about this, because of how hard of a time I had last semester (first year, hard time adjusting) I'm having to look hard at how I'm going to squeeze everything in. So am looking at taking classes during this coming summer. No prereq's but still classes I need to take to get on track for things. Like college algebra so I can take Calculus Fall 08. Actually, I take that back, at least one class will be a prereq. I'm looking at Intermediate Comp which will fulfill my second requirement for Composition. My school requires 2 semesters of Comp, I will end up having taken 3 semesters by the time I'm ready to apply.

Veyep, hear anything yet?

Anyone know KU's policy on summer classes? That's my priority school.

I called USC pharmacy admissions office regarding taking pre-req (physics) courses during summer in the university that I attend. I was told that they recommend not to take it during summer because they want the students to learn the subject and not to rush thru it, but they will still accept it. 👍

I think that taking the general education classes over the summer would be ok because it's not something that your whole education depends on (like science and math).
