I'm thinking of taking Organic Chemistry Lab 1 and 2 and Physics 1 and 2 over the summer at CC. The CC is closest and cheapest for me. I know ppl say not to take i there, but I have to take these courses this summer for a double major which I really want to do. Each is taught in 6 week segments. Is this a good idea?

I am a cc transfers student (just to show you I have no bias against cc's).

I don't think it is a good idea to take pre-reqs at cc's if you are already at a university. Whether your intentions are noble or not doesn't really matter because in the eyes of some adcoms it could be looked at as taking the easy road (which I don't think it is, but I'm not an adcom).

If you must take some classes there take some that aren't pre-reqs. Take classes that are pretty universal such as math. Physics may be alright also.

Terrible idea...

Ok how about just Orgo Labs at a CC and maybe an upper level Bio at a 4 year?

No! O-chem of any kind at a CC (meaning it's lower division) is always a no-no. Just don't do it. It will limit your choices in med schools later as some require ochem to be upper division whereas others similar don't accept CC prereqs at all.

NO! Are you seriously willing to reduce your chances of getting into medical over something like this?

I'm going to a CC and I'm not taking any of my pre-reqs here, even though it will probably mean doing a year of light post-bacc work to finish them off. Its a common fact that medical schools look down at pre-reqs taken at CC, especially if you are already enrolled in a 4-year.

I wouldn't go as far as to say, "It is common fact that med schools look down on pre-reqs taken at a cc." What is common fact is the second part of your statement; it looks real weird if one is already at a four year. There are plenty of people on here that started off at a cc and took some of their pre-reqs there and came out just fine, often times without mention of it in interviews. Now, if you are intending to go to Harvard, then yea, it will hurt.

Anyways OP, orgo at cc's is usually class and lab together or nothing. You usually can't take labs independently. Further, IMO, it is never a good idea to take split sequences. If you start a sequence in orgo at one place, it is a good idea to finish it there.

Bottom line; if you want to take calc, English, psyc 101, etc. at a cc over the summer then that probably won't hurt. But avoid the pre-reqs.

Hence the reason I'm not taking my pre-reqs at a CC :xf:

The fact that it's in the summer is OK, but taking at a CC is a 👎. Can't you take at in the summer at a 4 -year school? I think most of the big universities (those that I know of, at least) offer these intro classes in the summer.
