I've participated in summer research programs for the past two summers and I wanted to do it again this coming summer before dental school. Why? Excellent stipends, gaining research experience, possibility of publishing, networking with members of the field - and wow does it look good on a resume!

Does anyone know of dental/oral bio research programs that accept newly matriculated dental students? Any information would be helpful!

Thanks 🙂

check out university of Minnesota School of Dentistry. They talked about a summer research program while I was there for my interview. I'm not sure if you have to be matriculating into their freshmen class to participate--but check it out

Check out UCSF School of Dentistry. They have summer program calls the Newsbrun fellow. About 20 students do it a summer. They have good stipends, non-restricted working hours, and get acquainted to the new school. There were two ppl in my class did it last year b4 they started and they absolutely love it.

uconn has one for minorities also

so is baylor, michigan, marquette and new jersey

Minnesota offers one for incoming freshman as well as for students from every class. I was offered to do one. It is 10 weeks and you get $4000. It sounds quite interesting.

I think that most schools offer summer research opportunities to their own students, so you should be able to arrange something comparable wherever you decide to enroll.

I also know that the University of Rochester (NY state) offers a summer research program for dental students. Appeals to my interests although I probably won't have any time over the summer to participate. Rochester does not offer pre-doctoral training, but in a few years we will all be knocking each other over to get into their first-rate post-graduate specialty and PhD/dental research programs.

I agree that summer research is a great way to acquire a taste for diverse areas of research - and also to live in different areas of the country - while gaining valuable experience and making a little [very little] money. Peace.
