As long as you're not sitting on your behind all summer, you're good. I think working in the hospital would be better because getting a firsthand look at what medicine is actually like is a big plus, whereas going to SMDEP you're just with a bunch of other neurotic pre-meds who have no idea what they're getting into.
 
check for an REU. i had a great time with mine and got paid more than i could have doing anything else (>$10/hr)... and double win because it was something i actually wanted to do
