Hi there! I am a Medical student from Europe, and I would like to do any kind of clinical research internship in the USA next summer. I am really interested in research, but I am looking for a more "clinical" research rather than only a lab based programme.

Have you heard of any internship like this? And do they accept International students??

Thanks a lot in advance. I look forward to your answers!! 🙂

Does your school have ties to any med schools in the US? Contact people from those US schools.
If you are interested in a particular field of clinical research, see if any of your professors/PIs/mentors know US professors in the same fields, ie leverage your networks, and try to find a spot in a lab somewhere.
Pick a state of interest, make a list of the med schools in the state, and start looking for clinical researchers with interesting projects, then contact them directly - talk to your school about the specifics of cover letters, adapting resumes, etc.

Does it have to be paid, or can you support yourself? You'll find many more unpaid opportunities.

Where are you in your training? Did your medical school start right after secondary school? Do you have clinical training yet?

NYU has a great clinical internship program, but I do not think it is available to int'l medical students.

Thank you for your answers! I am currently studying my 3rd year of Medical school, but I think the system in Spain (I am Spanish) is kind of different. We start Medical school right after high school and it takes 6 years to finish and become a MD. The first 2 years and a half is like a "premed" (we study biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, biostatistics, general pathology, pharmacology, microbiology...) and then, the last 3 years are more "clinical".

My school has ties with USA med schools but according to my system of studies I can only do an internship in those Schools for only one summer, and the internship involves working in a hospital with patients, not reasearch. So I prefer waiting until I have more clinical experience before applying for that.

That's why I asked you, because I would like a programme which doesn't need any kind of University ties, or relationships between my University and the USA med school.

And of course If it's paid it would be much better

If your dream is getting a residency in the US, I strongly advice you to take the internship in the US. Furthermore, the internship is always "paid" by the host institution 🙂

Yes, that's why I want to take the intership in the US. I just don't know where to find an internship that suits me, because I can't take the internships organized by my school until I finish my 4th year (and I am currently on my 3rd one). So for next summer I would like to find something "on my own" if that's possible...

Schools allow international students to come until their final year, not before
