  1. Medical Student
Hi,
I'm a French medical student, just starting my 5th year. Next summer, I can do my summer vocational training course abroad and I would like to do it in Ireland (Dublin or Galway) or even any university hospital of the UK. But my university (Toulouse) doesn’t have any convention with Ireland nor the UK. So, I've sent several mails to International office of the different universities of Ireland. But it is said that it is not easy to obtain the authorizations from the hospital and the university. That's why I would like to know if any of you is well informed about that and could help me...
Then I have other questions... I don't really know the organization of medical studies in Ireland, Do medical students have to do a lot of vocational course at the hospital? Do they work at the hospital during the summer or are they totally free during holidays? Which hospital is more famous for its vocational courses or which ones do students prefer?
Thanks for your answers

If you're not getting help from the international offices, I would try emailing certain consultants who're working in the Irish hospitals in the field you're interested in. Also, phone calls may work better as email correspondence may not be a strong suit of Irish med school admin.

A couple of months ago I started to look for electives to do in other countries... I tried US, scotland, england... and I found difficulties finding place and other little problems... And I end up finding a post on a forum about electives in Ireland, and it had a long list of hospital sites in Ireland and it was written that if you email a consultant of a department asking to place you there you could actually be accepted! I gave a try, I was not very sure it would work because the post was old (like 4 years ago)... So, I tried St. James' Hospital site and choose some doctors from the list of assistants and sent some emails. To my surprise I got one answer in the next day! It was an elective in emergency and they said that they still have places for July and August and if I was interested I should send a letter of recommendation and other documents..!😀
I sent my letter like 2 weeks ago, and I'm very anxious for the answer...:scared:

I wanted to know experiences from people who went there for elective, and if someone is going there by this period I want to make contact!!!

this is the website I found the emails: http://www.stjames.ie/Departments/ConsultantsA-Z/

If someone wants to know to which consultant I emailed send me a private message...!

Hi,

I'm a Belgian medical student and I had the same problem as you two years ago. The only hospital I could find in Ireland to accept European students for elective placements was the Rotunda (maternity) Hospital in Dublin, where you can do an elective in obstetrics and gynaecology during the months of july and august. I had a great time there, so I can really recommend it.

The one you'll want to mail to obtain an elective placement there is Mrs. Eva O'Connor, the master's secretary. Her email is [email protected]

Grtz,
Rooseleeer.

I'm planning to do my elective in Ireland this coming winter. But i seems to be lost of ideas. I'm interested in doing either general medicine or ob&gy. so please give me a head start.

at first i planned to apply to hospital in Dublin but as my sis will be working in Mullingar so now i don't really have a plan. 🙁
