Hey SDN,

I was wondering if you guys knew of any jobs available in the summer (start med school in the end of August) for someone with a degree in Neuroscience. I was thinking Kaplan but I found out that they have a 6 month minimum commitment. If it makes a difference my sub scores were BS:14PS:14V:12. The job doesn't even have to be MCAT tutoring I'm kinda losing my mind playing dota all day XD, so I come to you sdn to crowdsource some temporary employment ideas.

Also I'm in the southern California area.

Thanks!

You could tutor independently through something like Craigslist? I'm sure you could lure people in with your MCAT score.

Otherwise, you could just get a normy job. Work retail or in food service. You'll make money, you aren't making a huge commitment, and lots of those places expect seasonal summer employees. I worked at Anthropologie for a few years and always had fun, as well as enjoyed the discounts!

yeah true ill take a look on craigslist. retail/food also sounds pretty good too. I just feel so useless sitting around at home >.<

Craigslist tutoring gigs are really spotty in my experience. I actually had a nursing student try to solicit me to take her online, open book, chemistry exam for her (a retake at that!). My summer job will be be lounging on my laurels.

When I applied for a Princeton Review instructor position in my area I told them I would be starting med school in August and they still offered me the job, but then I ended up not taking it because I was pulled off the waitlist at a school that starts in July 😛 I guess it depends on how badly they need instructors, but maybe Examkrackers or Princeton Review in your area don't have a 6-month commitment. If that doesn't work out, there's always volunteering if you're really bored.

Why be a MCAT tutor just do something else like research at a hospital/university or intern at a company or something.

are you good at dota? let's play! 😀 pm me if you want

Do something easy and mindless - retail, food services. I worked construction during my summers and that was a pretty good gig too but I wouldn't qualify it as easy

Survivor DO

Ya because those opportunities just grow on trees.

I love waiting tables, but I've worked in the restaurant industry for a while now. Perfect summer job, especially at a place that only serves Dinner. Have all day to yourself to sleep in/relax/go to beach/pool then work at night.

I think you should do something laid back, non-medical related. Teach a sport to kids or something.

Lol just continue playing dota that's what I've been doing when I'm not at work haha

Honestly, check out restaurants. Good pay, short hours, you can't go wrong. I was a valet driver for a few summers and reeled in as much as 300-400 a night on weekends. Waitresses can pull in at least 200, and if you work the bar even more. You can work as much as you want, days till 4ish or evenings at 5ish, and still enjoy the summer before med school.

Outside of tutoring, your options with a high MCAT are the same as your options without a high MCAT. And unfortunately, your MCAT is unlikely to count for anything again. I did have one residency program that asked for them, but they only did for one application cycle and never again after that.

Look for tutoring jobs with smaller companies.

I don't have a MCAT score anywhere neat that and I tutor MCAT, bio, chem, and physics for high school and college students on top of my current research job. It' pays pretty well but obviously it won't be a full-time gig.
