summer ms1 out of state research programs

I've searched and couldn't find a reasonable answer. Sorry in advance if this question has been covered!

I was wondering if there were any ms1 research summer opportunities out of state. If so how do you go about finding these. Most I've found and I'm looking in california, are reserved for instate or school affiliated students.

Secondly, preceptorships (sp) out of state. Is that like shadowing, where you contact individual doctors? Or are there programs that help you find precepterships (sp) out of the state you attend medical school.

I know MSK in NYC holds a summer research experiences for MS1/MS2's that's open to an US medical student interested in cancer related research. They're competitive (50 slots, maybe 600 applicants), but everyone has a shot.

What is the criteria that they rank the applicants on? MS1 grades? ECs during MS1?

Thanks in advance. I will be starting MS1 in 3 weeks and am thinking of what to do during my summer of MS1 and MS2.
