Soo... this summer I am doing this thing called at my school called Urban Semester where I do rotations in hospitals in new york city, and if I choose so, I can also get involved with clinical research. I also get credit for it (yay A's!), I am a sophomore right now and I plan to do this this upcoming summer. I am also a global health minor (working towards it), so the next next summer (before my senior year) I am doing an 8-week field experience where I can work with Weill-Cornell Physicians in an impoverished area, in hospitals, etc. (also get credit for this as well). Last summer I interned at a Peruvian clinic where I basically learned how to give a full examination, helped with triaging patients (there was not many workers in these clinics), and shadowed doctors that really helped me develop my fluent language (spanish) in a more medical way.
My question is.. am I missing something in terms of summer ec's? Like is this tooo.. clinical heavy? Idk. I really like the stuff I have been doing. I am also doing research this semester at school and plan to do it until I graduate. I am a science major (nutrition), but sometimes I feel like other pre-meds are way more science-y than I am.. I'm just worried that maybe I should do something science intensive but I really don't want to. Does this mean I'm not meant to be a doctor? I also go to an ivy league, so maybe its just the people I'm around are just more sciency in general? I feel bad.. what advice can someone give me?
In terms of other ec's,
I also have a leadership position in a nutrition volunteering club where I facilitate nutrition lessons to elementary schools around my area, and I am a trained nutrition educator. I also have worked in a pediatric clinic on all my breaks back home.
I am a URM and I plan to apply after my senior year, my grades are decent, not great, but I am working on that upwards trend and right now it's pretty good.

Should I be doing something else this summer? Thanks.. and I know I sound like a crazy pre-med llol oh well 😛

I don't know if you read my message ahahaa
umm my summer program (urban semester) is a hospital internship and we are required to do community outreach program (volunteering)... my post was about if my summer experiences are sufficient (I'm not interested in doing research over the summer since I do it already in school)

Basically if you keep doing what you're doing, you'll get in without a problem at all

I read your post. You need more research. Grrr...

Wait I'm really concerned now haha especially for all my premed friends who don't do research period. I will have 3 years of solid research done before I even apply, yet I still need more? So confused! I know I might have something missing but not research? Plus, I will most likely get involved in research this summer but combined along with my rotations, do i really need more research?

I guess not, but i am also applying MD/PhD....so yeah 🙄

You're fine. Yes, you don't have nearly so much research as most UG, and much more clinical. In a way, your experience seems so rich that it's almost too ideal. I mean, once you apply to medical school, are you prepared to "just" do typical grunt work when you've already 'done it all'?

Sorry, but what kind of rotations will you be doing as a rising junior in college? Again, you're doing it all as a sophomore undergrad, except getting an MD.

Haha oh yay! I have so much respect for people doing MD/PhD! I could never do that..

Butt I am still confused about the other posts saying I will not have as much research as other undergrads.. I'm like one of the only people in my school who has already gotten involved in research this early! And my pre-med advisor told me its not completely necessary so I am confused as to how 3 years of me doing researchis not enough :scared: ugh if it's not one thing its another!

Plus, I am really looking forward to my experiences.. maybe I can hear from an actual med student? Should I forfeit one of my experiences to do something like being stuck in a lab all day? (AKA something I may not enjoy as much). If so.. I'll have to withdraw from urban semester.. which really pains me because the application and selection process was intense! =( ugh.

Anyway, about the clinical rotations, it's a program run by my school in conjuction with Weill-Cornell Medical College. You get to create your own set of rotations (and clinical research if you want to, which I guess I'll really try to get involved in) with departments of your choosing. So my friend did an Obgyn roration and she got to deliver babies all summer! and my other friend was in the OR and got to scrub into many surgeries.. basically you build relationships with doctors, because you do the same rotations you picked all summer. And im going to try to make the theme of my application about becoming a primary physician for minorities (it's what I'm really passionate about), so I will try to get rotations in the public hospitals of nyc, which may not be the smartest idea.. hahaa... scary 😛
