Hi everyone,

I often receive a lot of great information from this forum and I would like to ask the advice of those of you who are more advanced in their academic careers than I. I am currently an M1 who knows that pediatrics is her calling (it's my reason for attending medical school). I volunteered quite extensively in undergrad, but in only one pediatric setting. I would really like to get a flavor for all the different subspecialties that peds has to offer, and since this is the last summer that I have off, this seems like the ideal time to do it.

I would be very grateful if you could share with me any summer pediatric programs that you know about or have participated in.

Thanks so much🙂

The Dept. of Newborn Medicine at Children's Boston has a wonderful summer research program. They have research opportunities of all types. They also give you clinical exposure as well( i.e. NICU experience, etc.) while offering a great stipend. Go to their website and call the dept. for more details.

I applied to the American Pediatric Society-Society for Pediatric Research program and the lab that I worked at as an undergrad was one of the laboratory sites so I did 8 weeks of research in scoliosis. There is a good stipend and they have participating labs all over the country. The website is:

Thank you for your feedback and I will definitely look into both programs.

The University of Rochester has the Strong Children's Research Center summer scholars program, which is a summer research program with opportunities for some clinical work as well. Try http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/SCRC/sumprogs.htm for more info.

do you have any other suggestions besides research - what do residency programs look favorably upon for the summer between first and second year? does it really matter?

thanks so much for your help!
