Ok, I planned on doing alot this summer. I hoped I would get into an internship or lab, volunteer, shadow, and work...or do mix....unfortuanately, i failed lol....i didnt get that internship and i cant work in the lab until later(although i did get teh spot).also, shadowing is alot harder than i expected.....

so at this point, i am going to work 2 days/wk as usual, volunteer for hab. for humanity once a week (probly just for the summer b/c scheduling conflicts during the school year) , and hopefully i get a volunteer position at a clinic, although i don't know how much actual patient contact i will get...thus assuming i am able to volunteer in the clinic, i would only stay busy for 4 days/wk.....i feel like this is too little since i planned on going big this summer...and if i dont get the volunteering position, thats 3 days a week.....

plus, almost all applications for any programs are closed by now....i know that i shouldnt get involved by going through a checklist, but not doing anything is also bad...

an option i might have is to volunteer in the ER at a hospital i am already at....i do research in the ER there already and i get alot of patient contact...i see volunteers there but their jobs are limited to folding sheets and stuff...but still, its volunteer work....

so my question is, what are some options i can take? also, if i can't find anything else, should i just volunteer in the ER (although i dont want).....lastly, how busy are you during the summer?

P.S. i don't have much clinical exp...the only thing i have is the research work in which i go to the ER and talk to patients about studies....the only other clinical exp i would have is the volunteering at the clinic IF I GET IT

TT

hmm, always a tough predicament to find enough to do that is meaningful during the summer. I saw from your other posts that you are only a sophomore, so my recommendation is that you might want to check out some local EMT courses that you could take during the summer. This would set you up for some better clinically related experiences during your third year, and also starts to fill the gap in clinical experience that you have noted.

Best of luck.

Try working at the local hospice. That is what I did. Some hospices are literally desperate for volunteers because they need a certain percentage of their work force to be volunteers by state law or something. Call every hospice that is in your local area. It is great patient contact experience and you really feel as if you are making a difference.

^^will do...ty for your answers....

i just always feel like i am not doing enough. Even if i am busy 6/7 days of the academic year with classes, work, and just one extra thing i do that is related to my career goal...i know hta some ppl here are hardcore and comparing myself isnt good but then i dont want to fall behind, which i feel like i am doing and probly am to a certain extent

you don't always have to go through established programs
if you want to work in a lab, you can try looking up people's emails and asking them if you could volunteer in their lab for the summer
same thing goes for shadowing

but you'll probably get a better yield if you go through your school (premed office) and find some alumni. people are a lot more willing to help people who share something in common, such as attending the same college
