So I know this has been done in previous years, but what is everyone planning on doing with this summer, especially those of us heading off to vet school in the fall?

My original plan was to start getting skin cancer at the beach all summer but just got offered a job at the equine clinic where I volunteer/shadow, so I guess beach time will be minimized. This is both good and bad.

Nothing exciting, unfortunately. I'm volunteering at 2 vet clinics M-F during the day and when I come home I study for the MCAT 😱. Weekends are my break and hopefully I'll have time to make a weekend trip to visit my boyfriend and best friend at school soon!

I'll be working full time as usual until the first week in August. I love my job and the people I work with so not a big deal...plus I desperately need every paycheck I can get! Then I'm heading to Kentucky for the last week of the KY Summer Series at KHP since it will most likely be my last chance to show for quite some time! Pretty bummed about that but vet school is more then worth it!

I am applying this cycle so I get to do all the stuff that pertains to that.

I'm currently volunteering at a strictly pet bird clinic/rescue. I still need to contact some people, but I plan to shadow LA and equine vets this summer as well. I'm also volunteering at a new shelter (new = opened this spring) for a couple of weeks.

There are a few trips planned that include the beach, the lake, and the VIDA trip. I'm really looking forward to those 🙂

Everything else will be pretty random, besides trying to fix the broken pre-health organization on my campus (you know it's bad when the advisor has to call meetings so elections actually happen).

I'm working at a SA clinic and an equine clinic. I have to close on my new place to live in June, then I'm probably making a preliminary painting/moving trip at some point in time. The last two weeks of July I'm heading over to Europe and the Middle East for a few weeks before starting school in August!!! 😍
UM2014, have fun showing at the horse park! They have made so many improvements for the WEG, it is gorgeous. I'm seriously bummed about missing them in the fall, but vet school is worth it 😀.

Thanks! I'm in love with the footing there even though one of my horses is pretty sure the Johnson rings grandstand is going to eat him (fingers crossed that he grew up enough over the winter to at least pretend to have a brain 🙄). Oh well, at least he doesn't even notice the open water anymore. I'm actually heading down next wednesday for the second week of the spring series so we'll see how it goes. I haven't been down since the KY National last fall so I'm excited to see what else they've done. Definitely my favorite venue!

I'm working a non-vet job that pays me room and board, and doing vet things in my spare time. I've arranged a couple of shadowing experiences with the vets at the NCSU teaching hospital, hopefully shadowing at a nearby companion/exotics vet, and arranging a project with the living collections of a nearby museum. Also studying for the GRE in early August. I plan to be busy, but nap often. 😀

I may be working at the spay and neuter clinic I worked at last summer. However, I talked one of the vets there and she said if she was me, she would just take the summer to relax before having no life for 4 years.
I was also offered the opportunity to travel with my veterinarian on his farm calls. I also have a trip planned to Lake Erie and Ohio in July, and maybe one other trip right before school starts. Classes for me only ended 5 days ago, so my brain is still trying to recover from that!

Working with my municipality doing waste reduction public education. Not vet work, but good pay, close to my house, and regular hours! And it's NOT retail!

I'll also be sneaking in the odd horse show on the weekends when I can.

The things that I will definitely be doing: Working full-time at the local shelter, planning a wedding from 800 miles away, trying to get more large animal experience, re-applying to vet schools
Things I would like to do: Make some weekend trips out to Chicago, convince my fiance that we should have a dog, get caught up on my scrapbooking (I'm 3 years behind), read lots of books

I'm leaving my full time veterinary assistant job in July (it's a very stressful job/workplace) to relax and de-stress before I move to Ithaca in early August. So for the month of July I'll sleep a lot, eat, hang out with friends/family, regain my sanity (so I can lose it again in vet school), and just appreciate life. I'm also going to Arizona in late July for my bday to hang out with my best friend and see Lady Gaga!!! 🙂 I can't wait.

Two days after graduation I'm starting full-time as a vet assistant at the small animal clinic that I've been volunteering at. Also might volunteer once a week with a wildlife/exotics vet if my schedule works out. And in my tons of free time, going to be doing vet apps all over again. Trying to cram in as much experience as I can before apps are due (and then of course keep it up all year while I'm waiting). Definitely not looking forward to rewriting my personal statement from last cycle and dealing with the VMCAS tediousness again. Exciting the first time, now just annoying. The plan is to work all summer and through next spring, get in to vet school this second time around (please?!), and then leave my job and go travel and volunteer around South and Central America for a few months before vet school starts. Would loveee to travel this summer, I have such the travel bug, but the important thing right now is to build up my experience and especially a strong relationship with the vets so I can get good recc letters. At least I'll be living with nice warm weather and beautiful beaches!

1 week in London
1 week in Cape Cod
A long weekend in the hamptons
Working very little so I can hang by the pool with my friends
Enjoying my last summer before I become a vet student 😀

Working as a vet assistant until the first week in July. Then going on a vacation to St. Kitts, then to Chicago (maybe?). Then moving to Iowa like the first week of August.

Working. And going to DC at some point, I think, for a few days.

Working until Mid July, fixing up and cleaning my new abode in Ames...showing my horse....All good things.

You'd better post here when you know your plans so we can have a D.C. get-together! BlacKAT and I are both (for now, until we leave) in the MD suburbs of D.C. and I'm pretty sure there are others, but I can't think of names off the top of my head. I promise I don't really bite and I have all my shots! 😉

I have one more final (yaaaay! yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!!) tomorrow, then a week of NOTHING, then back to working part-time at the horsepital until mid-June and trying to ride my friend's horse as much as possible before I leave (cowgirla, I like the goal of putting brakes on your friend's horse and am jealous of your LI plans). Mid-June, I'm driving down to the sandhills of NC to visit a friend for a couple days, then coming back and preparing for my cross-country adventure.

Around the first day of July, I am leaving on a cross-country driving trip to visit friends and get my car out to Davis. In the middle of July, I'm doing an equine RAVS trip in ND. I'm going to go a northern route because of RAVS, friends, and places I'd like to see -- MD - WV - KY - IN - MI - MN - ND/RAVS - SD (Black Hills!)/WY/??? - MT - WA (Seattle) - OR - CA. I expect to get to CA in early August. My parents are going to send most of my stuff when I get there, probably with one of those u-pack deals that lets you store stuff before/after. My cat will be joining me at some point by plane, I'm not sure when.

I'm excited and kind of nervous!

I think this is the third time we've had this thread already this year. 😛 Is this what happens when twelvetigers isn't around to regulate these sorts of things?

It keeps reminding me that I'll be thesis-writing all summer. hoooo boy...

Will let y'all know if I go. It's for my cousin's graduation but I'm also trying to get a job so if I do that, then I'm giving my ticket to another cousin. Been there once in 6th grade on a school trip. Only got to see enough to know that I"m going to have to take a lot longer trip there some day. The Smithsonian is absolutely fantastic.

Oh also got kicked off of Capitol Hill because some friends and I were 'mooning' (just bent over, no flesh) people from the steps.

That's a waste. If you're gonna get kicked off, you gotta make it worth it, jeez.
Heh.

Well, even if HopefulAg decides to be boring and grown-up, 🙁 I think we still need to have a D.C. SDN event before we disperse.

Hey I'm going to be in D.C. mid June -- let me look at dates and get back to you guys...this might potentially maybe possibly work 😉

Hey me too.. I'm doing an internship at Beltsville. (Btw if anyone knows of a place I rent for midJune to mid July lemme know!)

Hmm i know lots of places in DC but beltsville is far away. Will you have a car?? The best situation i can think of is sublease from college students. UMD is near beltsville but you will definitely need a car. If you want to live on UMD campus and comute you should look up subleases in South Campus Commons and The Courtyards. They are two apartment complexes at UMD and people always need someone to sublet because it is a year lease and a lot of OOSers leave for the summer. Let me know, i can find you links with people posting their apt and price

You can't sublet from commons or courtyards unless you're affiliated with the university of maryland in some way.

working at a small animal vet for all of june as a vet assistant.. spending all of july in Scandinavia, and then working my ass off in august (studying for and taking the gre, working full time so i can earn back the money i spend in europe, and applying to vet school for the first time)..😀

Yea, isn't that what all apartment complexes say? lol it's done allllll the time

I will be interning at Woodlands Wildlife Refuge for the summer, working at my regular PetSmart job, and maybe working a night job at a small animal emergency clinic.

All work and no play for me! Though fun animal work... 😍

I mean, if you go under the radar, you can sublet your commons or courtyards apartment to anyone you want. But if you want to officially have the subletter's name on the contract (so that they are held responsible for anything that happens) then they have to be a student. Commons is so particular...yay for having to bite the bullet and pay rent during the summer for two years :/

I'm going to Canada in July (Never been out of the country before :soexcited:) and will probably get up to NoVa/Maryland at some point, but most of my summer will consist of fencing and generally getting ready. I plan to read a in my spare time. I haven't read a new novel since January.

First on my agenda is getting rid of this sinus infection. Someone remind me the point of these things again?

working almost full time at my small animal clinic, hanging out with my vet while she teaches me some large animal stuff on her horses, riding my pony at our new fancy-schmancy jumper barn and BEST of ALL:

GOING ON A VIDA TRIP IN AUGUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but I'm not excited about that at all....nope not one bit. 😀

Riding a friends horse, and any other horses my former instructor lets me ride, and I was going to volunteer at an equine clinic but I have a job interview tomorrow for a job at a pizza place... Real money takes precedence over no money, unfortunately. I'm going to have to find time to volunteer somewhere while I'm at school next year (which shouldn't be too hard, next semester I'm taking 15 hours but only 4 classes).

Had to get away from all the madness! My wife and I abruptly decided last week to take a trip in the midst of the chaos and have cobbled together a 2 week trip to Germany.

Leaving tomorrow. Hopefully I won't get the shakes from SDN withdrawal (leaving the laptop behind!).

Catch you all next month.

Later.

Wow sounds like that will be fun!

I just came back from a 2 week vacation to Japan. You'll be fine without SDN. You might not even notice. 😛

Have a safe trip! 🙂

It looks like I'll be spending my summer volunteering places. Right now I'm keeping myself preoccupied with a horse camp that will last until mid August. I'm not really into kids, but I need the volunteer time and the experience with horses won't hurt. I suppose that I get to learn about horse-stuff as I'm teaching it to kids, anatomy, tack, management, etc. I also get to craft and draw like two hours everyday, which is awesome. Plus, I get to play with horses and lead them around (I'm not much into riding them).

I get to yell at kids, "don't stand behind the horse," every day.

I'm also looking to volunteer with the local humane society in the evenings. They have lots of rabbits and dogs.... my favorites.

Aside from that I'm still hoping to land a paying job or two.

... and occasional trips home to prepare things to move into my own apartment in September. It's taken five years, but I can finally be free of roommates and the drama many of them breed.

Oh gosh, on both counts. I worked a few summers at a riding camp and I remember going to check on some kids practicing grooming their horses (which brushes to use where/when, etc) and I walk into the stall to find one of them SITTING on the ground directly in front of the horse's front hooves. :scared:

And I just moved into my own apartment, no roommates or sisters or anything. Just me and the dog. It's glorious - enjoy!

Bye SOV!!

BTW- we're having a second Penn c/o 2014 outting July 17th (not sure if you'll be back yet)

i'll try to remember to message you, til then, sign up for fb! you can make it private to everyone except your penn pals if you want. but it is so much easier for event planning!

I'll be playing soccer, watching the world cup, grilling, and enjoying my time outside of a Lab/classroom.

Taking 14 hours of summer school classes.
VMCAS & Supplementals
Six Flags over Georgia - I've got a season pass w00t!
Taking my hyperactive dog on long walks

:bump:

One of the other threads started discussing what to review over the summer, started to get off track and so I thought I'd bump this older thread and ask what everyone is planning to do this coming summer? Especially those of us starting vet school in the fall - but also curious to hear plans from pre-vet students or current vet students!

My plan is working, taking an amazing vacation around Europe, moving to a place closer to campus, and working again.

Working, too! Hopefully going to Comic-con... I didn't get tickets the first time around so I'm waiting for the re-sale. This is for SDCC. And then moving part of the way across the country! Maybe also going to be Beach in June... not sure on that one.

Working 4 days/week at a SA clinic and weekends at my restaurant job. Aka trying to save up as much loot as I can before I take up giant loans. BF and I are trying to plan a trip to Myrtle Beach or somewhere close to there but if it's going to be too expensive then we'll drop that idea.

Last year my SO and I tried to get tix to PAX Prime and failed, so we were going to try again this year. Unfortunately now I won't be able to go, but he's still planning on trying for tix 🙂 Hope you get in! And definitely hit up a beach !

Working full time (non vet-med field) and trying to stay sane. I reeeeeally wish I could quit sooner but health insurance and all that fun stuff dictates that I stay here until August. As I mentioned in the other post I'm going to try to set up some sort of exercise schedule (maybe even take a ballet class?) and eat a bit healthier. I also have about 6 years of digital photos I'd like to go through and edit/purge but this has been my goal for a few summers now so we'll see
