summer prereq classes?

Do Pharmacy schools look down upon prerequisite courses taken over the summer? I was thinking about taking my organic classes this summer so that I can focus on my physics and bio classes in the fall.

Any thoughts?

Some schools won't even take summer science classes, check with the schools you are applying to before making a decision. Organic is a pretty tough class already, taking both semesters during the summer? Crazy.

Haha, You're right I think that's crazy too. I actually dropped those because I had registered for them, but after massive contemplation I have decided that it wouldn't be a good idea for more than one reason. But I think it sparked my interest in whether it's acceptable by pharm schools. I guess I should stick with gen eds for summer 🙂

Organic Chem is possible to do in the summer, it just has to be your main focus for those 6 weeks. So, taking it with another class is really out of the question.

microeconomics
anatomy
physiology
and some multicultural class I need for my BS.

These are all at a CC btw. How would that look?

I do not recommend taking entire year of organic chemistry in the summer (6 weeks).

More likely than not, your grades won't be as high as if you taken it in 30 weeks.

If you just wanna pass and graduate quickly, go for it.

If this is your first time taking organic chemistry and you want to be a competitive applicant for pharmacy school, I highly recommend you take these classes during the regular school year.

Admission Committee want successful students who put themselves in positions to succeed. In my opinion, it would be in your favor to take your time and learn the material well.

I'm taking 5 courses now and have another 3 to finish in the summer. Most of them are social sciences courses. For science, still one Organic lab and one physics to go

I don't think there is anything wrong with taking summer classes, considering you're paying the same amount of tuition per credit as the other semesters. You will still have to take the same number of exams and homeworks as the regular ones. It will definitely be more challenging because you'll have to learn all of the information in a shorter period of time.

I took microbiology over the summer at a different university than the one I go to because I wasn't sure my school was going to offer it. The pharmacy schools I applied to didn't have any problems with that.

The economics and multicultural class taken at a CC shouldn't be a problem at all. As for the A&P, since you're getting a BS, you more than likely have already taken the bulk of science classes at a university.

I spent every summer at CC during my undergrad and even took some advanced maths and physics there. Wasn't a problem at all.

I would not recommend taking anatomy over the summer, especially with other classes. I studied everyday for that class and took it during the fall semester. Honestly, I think memorizing all that anatomy is harder than the ochem stuff.

VERY FEW schools will say something against summer science courses. VERY FEW.

On the other hand, many schools have no problem with summer courses and in fact, if you don't have the prereqs finished by the time they interview you, they will tell you to get them done prior to matriculation. Implying you can apply without having the prereqs done, get into places (following interview or whatever), take the prereqs the summer prior to matriculation, and get in toastily. Be sure if you are taking the prereqs prior to the summer of matriculation that you email the Dean/Ast. Dean the courses you're taking to see if they qualify. Good luck.
