Has anyone heard of the Gateways to the Laboratory Program? Is it well-known among other MD/PhD administrators beyond Tri-I?

I never actually went to/applied for the Gateways program, mainly because I didn't know I wanted to do an MD/PhD when I was a Freshman/Sophomore, but I know a few people who were in the program and they all had a fantastic time. I can't speak to how program administrators view it, but at the bare minimum, you had a summer research experience at a fantastic institution, so I wouldn't worry too much. It's a fantastic experience, they pay for everything, and you get to spend the summer in New York!

But, like any other experience, I'm sure the relative impact of it depends on what you got out of it. If you can't intelligently talk about your summer research, I'm sure just being at Cornell over the summer won't be that impressive.

Just my 2 cents~! Anyway, if you got it, take it! I went to a similar program in Iowa and it was a fantastic summer. The only down side is that my New York friends/relatives now think I'm crazy for being in love with Iowa.

I actually can only speak from the perspective of someone who will be a part of Tri-I this fall. The program is amazing from those I've met who participated, and you get to work closely with MD-PhD students in the summer. Living in the UES is a plus, and having a connection at Tri-I before applying can really set you apart.

It should also be noted that Dr. Andersen regularly tries to bring together directors of other top MSTPs. With it, he advertises Gateways... so I would venture to say they are familiar with the program.

It can only help you.
