I, too, am a sophomore, and I am doing research this summer. It wouldn't be a bad idea for you to start in the summer (since things are only going to get more hectic for you), but I would only do it if you enjoy research. There are plenty of other opportunities that you could get involved in; research is demanding, and if you don't enjoy doing it, it might result in a miserable summer.

I guess what I am trying to say is that you should make sure that doing research is really worth giving up your summer (or part of it).

I did the "Summer Student Fellowship" program that Hartford Hospital offers as an undergrad. Its a ten week program in the summer that is absolutely fantastic. You get paired up with a physician for whom you do a research project. When you aren't working on your project you have free reign in the hospital to observe surgeries and shadow physicians. I spent an overnight in the ER, I watched a c-section, and I shadowed doctors in the AIDs clinic just to name a few cool experiences. They award around 14 fellowships each summer. It pays 2500 bucks and its great experience. Check out the harthosp.org website and do a search for the student fellowship. They're pretty competitive to get, and you have to go to an interview in Hartford.
