Hi everyone I wanted to ask all of you a quick question. I am a 1st year student quickly approaching summer. I probably won't sign on to do a 10-12 research project this summer because I found something that I was much more interested in doing this summer and is really a once in a lifetime experience. However, I really would like to do some peds research at some point and I fear that this summer may be my only opportunity. I'm not sure but is there time like say second year to hop on a research project? I'm not trying to get paid or anything I just really want to see what its like since I've never done it.

Also do you all have any idea how other schools feel about having a med student come on? I will probably be in my hometown during the summer and there is a big research institution there. I was thinking of e-mailing some of the faculty to see if any of them would let me hang out with them for a little while but I hear there are a lot of regulations to being in a lab and those type of things.

Forgive me I'm not too familar with how research and funding and all those other things work so I just wanted some insight from you all. I'm interested in Peds ID, Allergy and Immunology, and Heme/Onc. Sorry for the long post I just sometimes feel that you all are my only advice givers 😀

I don't think it's ever 'too late' to get into research. You're just unlikely to have the free time you will this summer and it may be harder to fit in. So if you've a once in a lifetime opportunity, it's probably worth taking.

As for doing research somewhere you're not a med student, I can't say for certain. It's definitely worth emailing and asking; just be specific in what you are asking and be clear in how much time you want to commit. The worst that will happen is that they'll say no.

Thanks a lot for the advice Stitch I really appreciate it.

depending on how many electives you get in years 3 and 4, you can probably set up a couple of research rotations(8 weeks or so). Take a look into it. Maybe ask your director of clinical research what other students have done in the past.

Ok Spooner I wasn't aware of that. I will definitely look into it. Thanks!!
