I'm a freshman and interested in doing some kind of biochem or molecular bio research this summer. I've found a few programs that accept applications from freshmen and, as expected, they all have low acceptance rates. So I was wondering whether it was okay to apply to several of these programs and, if I was lucky enough to get into more than one, how they would respond to me turning down an acceptance.

I don't really understand the problem. Applying for summer research is just like applying for anything else. When you applied to college, I'm assuming that you applied to more than one?

If they have low acceptance rates, apply to many of them. Then, when you get into more than one you'll have options.

As an undergrad, I applied for two different fellowships to work in the same lab, was offered both and of course had to turn one down. I assure you this is no big deal.

i spammed a lot of professors with my CV and cover letter in addition to filling out summer research apps. out of the 10 spots I applied for, I only got 1, so it would be good to apply to many.
