I've applied for some summer research, one at a cardiovascular research institute and one in bioengineering working on an implantable glucose monitor. Would these research experiences be helpful for a dental school application? I know observing a dentist is important, but haven't read anything about research before dental school. I would like to get back to a smaller town/rural area when all is said and done.
Thanks

On the AADSAS application, there is a place where you can include research experience (and write and essay about your research experience). Therefore, it must be something that at least some dental schools find to be important. Certain schools care more about research than others. It definitely would not hurt you and might give you an extra edge over other applicants (especially if you had some publications). I would encourage you to also get some experience in dental offices to make you look like a more diverse applicant as well. Research experience could also give you manual skills (there is an essay about manual dexterity on the AADSAS application as well). I included many manual activities on my essay ranging from performing magic tricks to research activities such as injections and micropipetting.

Hope that helps,
Jessica

I worked in a molecular genetics lab as an undergrad. I used the micropipetting as an example of manual dexterity....Fo sho

yes it will help more or less especially when applying for specialties. I'm glad of my extensive research experience- I have little problem getting into dental research programs to make a little extra $$ during the summer. It also opens the door to dental research/academics, which is always a good option when you're older the the hands are a bit shaky for private practice :)
