Hey,

I know this is gunner-esq but I have a really long summer break and I want to review some stuff from the M1 year. This is what I was thinking of. Please offer any opinions and suggestions (please none along the lines of don't study because I'll be doing my fair share of partying, travelling, working out, etc).

1. Physio - read Costanzo (5-10 pages/day). I want to have a very solid foundation of physio going into next year.
2. Biochem - read Lippincott (5-10 pages/day). Wasn't taught well at my school so I want to review it.
3. Read High Yield Cell/Molec Bio because my school specifically teach this stuff - its covered here and there but with no real organization
4. Look over First Aid for the relevant M1 sections.

Any thoughts? Also, do you think its overkill to read Costanzo and Lippincott? For instance, is BRS Physio better for Physio? I could get through BRS Physio several times in the time it took me to read Constanzo once.

The alternative is to read HY stuff from the first year - Immunology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Neuroanatomy, Gross Anatomy, and Biochem. Which plan is better for the long run and for acing the boards?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I reviewed several subject this past summer and can offer some advice...

👎 This is the best subject to review b/c it's concept based. Read BRS physiolgy instead. Concentrate on the big picture...memorizing anything else is a waste of time, I don't care how good your memory is. Know BRS physiology well, use Costanzo ONLY to clarify any confusion.

👎 👎 👎 If you simply must read biochem, read HY Biochem.

👍 Good idea to get through this once before Step. Review the chapters periodically throughout 2nd year...this is a good idea if you're a bonehead like me and need constant reinforcement.

👍 Annotate topics that are relevant...don't bother trying to memorize.

IMHO, you will waste your time on these subjects because you will forget the minutiae...

The argument for not studying so far in advance mainly stems from a person's general inability to remember everything you study, not necessarily that you need to get in all your partying.

That said, if I were time warped back to that summer and was forced to study board stuff from first year, I'd probably study BRS Phys (not Costanzo), Kaplan biochem (not Lippincott's), HY Cell/Molecular Bio, and relevant FA stuff. The other theory (the one you seem to be leaning toward) would be to hit Phys and Biochem with a little more depth by using lengthier book sources (Costanzo and Lippincott's). I honestly don't think enough people have done summer-before studying to give you a consensus, so I'd just do what pleases you. Either method will serve essentially the same purpose (even if it turns out to be a total bust).

hey,
thanks for the replies - they are good suggestions! i think im going to go with brs phys, HY biochem, and first aid....any other suggestions? thanks a ton for your help!
