hey guys i just finished my freshman year of college and was looking to hopefully shadow a few different optometrists just to make sure this is exactly what i want to do with my life and to also gain experience. I am not exactly sure how to go about shadowing, i wanted to just call up random optometrists but i am wondering why they would let me shadow them because they have nothing to gain by letting an undergrad student follow them around. How did you guys go about finding a willing optometrist? can anyone recommend an optometrist in the NY area specifically queens brooklyn or long island? any information regarding shadowing experiences is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone for taking time out of their day to read this and reply.

Okay, so first off...It's really awesome how you're starting to shadow the summer of your freshman year. It shows your dedication. Basically, I called/emailed several Optometrists around my area and asked if it would be okay if I observed them. Most of the time, they will say yes enthusiastically. I used to think the same thing "how does it benefit them"....in short, it really doesn't benefit them at all, but they were once in your shoes, so they know what it's like asking to shadow, etc. So don't worry about that at all! They will most probably say yes. Just make sure you are attentive and ask a lot of relevant questions while observing. 😉 Good luck!👍
