Hey guys, I missed most of the summer application deadlines due to extenuating circumstances, and now I'm kind of lost with what to do this summer.
I'm writing my MCAT on June 16th, so I'm going to be preoccupied with studying until then.
And I'm completing an EMT course in the weeks of 6/20,7/11,7/25,8/8.
I live in NY if that's any help.
ANY ADVICE on any opportunities would take me out of this depression.

p.s.: I've done my share of going through this forum and multiple threads, but I'm still looking for something more specific.

you could find a job or relax.

hmm.. relaxing is definitely not an option

hey SDN'ers what you guys doing for the summer?

why the beef against relaxing? it's pretty nice.

physics II, yum

and hopefully doing research, but I haven't heard back from the professor yet =/

You're doing the MCAT and an EMT course, and you still need more?

You could make some money or something.

Or relax.

can you tell me if there's any worth in taking an EMT course in the same summer you're applying to med school.. I most likely won't be done the course before I apply, but I can still say I'm about to finish and be certified right? and possibly indicate that i plan to apply my certification in such-and-such work after I get it done

My understanding is that it will be of little to no value for you with respect to the admissions process.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. But that's pretty much the only opportunity I can take advantage of this summer. I'm unsure as to what else I can do to be productive and boost my resume (besides volunteering at the E.R. which I'm already doing).

Doesn't seem worth it. Don't get certified unless you are going to use it. Even if you want to use it, look into the availability of jobs in your area. In some areas, it is very difficult to find a job, so an EMT cert wouldn't do you much good.

wonderful advice! I'm going to look into it before registering for a $950 course. But say I just wanted to pad my resume with the fact that I am EMT certified... would that be of any benefit?

Have you done any shadowing? The summer is the perfect time for that sort of thing, since you'll (presumably) have large chunks of free time after your MCAT.

It won't benefit you if you have no experience using it, me thinks.

As was said twice now, no.

Join a hockey league.

The summer before you apply is not the time to "beef" up your resume with new things that you haven't done before. However, the best thing you can do is to pick an activity that you have already shown a committed interest in and do something with that for the summer (which will add further weight to that activity on the application). If you are big into sports call your local sports league and see if there is a team that is still looking for a coach or assistant coach. Just look for volunteer opportunities in your community in an area that interests you.
