Now that I'm done with midterms :soexcited: I wanted to ask about my summer.
I plan to take the first two quarters of Orgo, leaving the third one for the end of junior year. This would give me all of August and a lot of September to do other things.

I wanted to save the almost 4k, but I know money shouldn't be holding me back. I also wanted to shadow doctors and do more clinical + hospital volunteering.

What do you think? Get it over with this summer or have almost a year between them? I've heard horror stories recently of 3 hour midterms during the 10 week quarter, I can't even imagine what summer Orgo will be like.

While Organic Chemistry during the summer will be a lot faster and more intense, unless you are taking other classes as well, you have the benefit of dedicating the entirety of your time and mental power towards that one class. Shadowing doctors and hospital volunteering isn't incredibly time consuming, so you should be fine.

So you think I should shadow + volunteer while doing Orgo? Would there be any disadvantage to take them a year apart?

Thank you!

Do you mean taking Organic Chemistry II and III a year apart? And yes, definitely shadow and volunteer!

Yes, I planned on only taking Orgo I-II and then taking III in the spring of junior year. This would leave a month and a half to relax and volunteer/shadow daily. I've been hearing horror stories about Orgo III now (3 hour midterm....?!) and am wondering if I'm better off knocking them all out the way?

Organic Chemistry III ties together many concepts you learn from I and II. There is a lot of build up upon previous concepts.

With that said, as long as you still remember basic concepts (electron pushing, nucleophilicity/electrophilicity, Sn2/Sn1/E2/E1, Carbonyl Chemistry), then you should be fine. Starting Organic Chemistry III, I didn't actually remember any of the specific reactions I learned from I and II and it was only two weeks after!

Haha all right, I'll take in the spring along with Physics Lab + Biology Lab, I'm nervous. 😀
